Wah for Vai/Satriani stuff? 535Q/Bad Horsie?

What wah in this price range do you guys recemond? I've been looking at the 535Q, but not sure how it performs under high gain. And although Vai uses the Bad Horsie, I've seen it's not recomended pedal around here...I'd go with a CFH, but it's a little expensive so I might stick with the 535Q. Any thoughts?

And no, I'm not interested in the Weeping Demon haha

I dunno, I have to give it to morley. I love my CFH, but I dig the ease of use and the sound of the bad horsie 2 a lot more.

Teese Wizard Wah by far.

I know Satch is using a Teese RMC3 wah right now. Paul Gilbert has one on his pedalboard too. Teese wahs are some of the best wahs you can get out there.

But he just signed a deal with VOX. They are going to replace every effect he uses with a VOX designed with him for him and eventually us. It's in the news section on the VOX page.

I use a Morley Bad Horsie 2 and it's pretty good, I really like how you don't have to click any buttons or anything. Just step on it and it senses your pressure. The contour is marginally useful, but not essential so I would also recommend the original Bad Horsie as well.

You can't always trust what someone "endorses". One of Tremonti's Mesa headshells was loaded with the guts of a Super Reverb, for example. Obviously, there's probably a lot of money involved on Satriani's part, so he'd be stupid NOT to accept the endorsement. Take it FWIW.

I wasn't saying VOX is the best. I was just stating the change in companies.

At the same time though, there is no need to be a conspiracy theorist either.

It's not being a conspiracy theorist...it's just the truth about many artist/endorsement relationship. But obviously it's too early to tell about Satriani's Vox deal.

To get back on topic, my point to the original poster was that if you want Satriani's current wah sounds (check out his latest DVDs, etc), then Teese is probably your best bet.

Yeah, sorry if I came off that way, I was just saying that it happens but that doesn't mean that every endorsed product isn't actually used by the artist.

I beg to differ Waylay. He's been using 535q's, rmc's and the proto Vox's lately. For the most part, he's been using the 535q for a number of years.

Fang, you can Joe's wah sound from a 535q without any problems.

True, but of those, the Teese is hands-down the best-built (MUCH better pot, FET buffer, true bypass, just all around better components). It does cost a little more, but IMO, it's worth it. If you REALLY want to be like Satriani, get both. Here's a picture of his pedalboard from the G3 2007 tour. The red one is the Wizard Wah:

The 535Q should be perfect for what you're looking for. I've been using the 535Q for the past 5 or 6 years. I got a Bad Horsie II a few months back, but still prefer the 535Q. Vai has been using a Dunlop 95Q since the Real Illusions tour, but I'm not so sure if that's still on his board. The CFH is great as well, but it's really a 535Q with LED's, slightly larger sweep, griptape, and a camo finish.

Re: Wah for Vai/Satriani stuff? 535Q/Bad Horsie?

But can the 535Q perform under high gain/Steve Vai situations? Will I be able to get some of the awesome sounds like in Tender Surrender? haha

I'm a newbie at wahs, but from what I know I do like "vocal" sounding wahs, everything from a nice "waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh" to "WAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Why is the Bad Horsie hated anyway? Or at least it seems to be a general consensus around here, like with the original Evo pups. Evo2 is killer just in case anybody is wondering btw

Ibanez Weeping Demon. Can do almost any wah sound out there by turning some knobs. I find it awesome. (I have it on Bad Horsie settings a lot but can go to "CFH" settings any time. Love that fact.)

I wouldn't consider Vai to be high gain, but yes the 535Q can handle anything you're playing. It cuts through very well. I wasn't very impressed with the Weeping Demon, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a try.
