If you can't go too loud but want a good valve tone then I would have one 12" at the most and go something under 50w maybe even under 30w.

Re: what amp to buy?

If i were looking to have great tube sound without a lotta racket i'd prolly look at this little amp from carvin:

Celestion speakers, great looks, and low wattage...........yes it's all there!

Re: what amp to buy?

Laney do some great little all valve combo's, i'd stay away from marshall valve combo's as they have to be CRANKED to obtain best results and/or get any decent kinda distortion out of them

FFS do you even read our posts?

what tones do you need, and how much cash do you have?

there's no point in me recommending, say, a cornford carrerra, if your budget is $200, and you play uber-modern death metal...

Re: what amp to buy?

^yeah, sorry, but it annoys me when you go out of your way to help people and they don't even read your post.

If he doesn't know what type of music he plays and how much cash he has, he probably shouldn't even be looking into buying an amp...

If we don't know his budget and what music he plays, we might as well not even make any recommendations at all. I know a load of amps that'll sound great at bedroom volumes, but they're pricey. And also aimed at a certain tone. Also, if he's willing to shell out for it, an attenuator would pretty much make most valve amps crank-able at bedroom volume.

But again, they're pricy.

So yeah, sorry about the outburst (a bit strong a term, but still, apologies), but I think I had a valid point.

cheers!

Re: what amp to buy?

Well what I did was, look at his needs when I reccomended just on a whole, to go for no more that one 12" speaker and keep the power low, well below 50w, perhaps even 30w.

Then he can look at amps that match that critera and decide for himself if he is prepeared to spend whatever money such amps cost that fall under that critera.

Re: what amp to buy?

I have a 15w Vox valvetronics. It's plenty loud enough. It models. Has a tube. Is inexpensive (approx. $179.00US) and sounds great. I highly recommend it.

They also have a 30watt model with a knob on the rear of the amp to adjust the wattage (Kinda whish mine had that). That way you can still crank the amp to get that nice tube warmth without blasting the neighbors (or the lady above you in this case).

BTW....I never would have thought I'd wind up with a vox. It just sounded the best to me. I played comparable Marshalls, Line 6, Crate, Fender, etc. Basically, I went into Guitar Center and played everything.

Re: what amp to buy?

If you can find a dealer, I HIGHLY reccomend going to find a Traynor amp. I just bought one of their 50 watt 1X12 combos and it's incredible. Amazing cleans and really good hard rock overdrive.

Built in solo boost for the overdrive and a bright switch for the clean channel. Excellent accutronics reverb, separate EQ for each channel, celestion V30 speaker.

It's the YCV50 model I believe. It's blue. I tried the 40 watt 6L6 version and while it was also very good, it didn't have as much gain as the 50 watt EL34 version and the overdrive wasn't quite as tight. When I played the 6L6 version, I couldn't help but think that this was the amp that fender was trying to produce but failed so miserably at when they designed the hot rod deville.

But yeah i really like mine and it keeps it's composure very well when cranked to the max. It's got a separate speaker output you can use or unplug the internal speaker and use both outputs. There's also a master volume so bedroom jamming can benefit from as much tube saturation as you want.

Here's a sound clip I made.

I can go from zeppelin to satriani with the flick of a switch. The clean when pushed hard gets a great warm driven vox/fender style overdrive.
