Drum triggers are either pads, or other "trigger" devices" that a drummer hits, located either on the drums or on stands by the drums, or tracks taken from recording sessions and then midi-fied. Remember the 80's huge snare crack? That was often a trigger. Triggers can be used to make a different sound, or used to trigger, hence the name, a sample, sequencer, or a lot of other stuff. The reason some people hate them is because they became such an "industry" standard and every record had "that" sound. Kinda like what the rockman did for guitar tones for a while. However, alot of bands, artists use triggers very creatively, its kinda of the same old thing, if your not creative your just gonna what everyone else did....

We use triggers live, but our drummer has a kick ass set. We basically use triggers' "mini piezo pickups" in place of microphones so we can control excess noise, feedback, etc. Our drum brain is set to a standard rock drum set with maybe some reverb, so what comes out the pa is pretty similar to what is actually coming out of the drums themselves. It's a neat system IMO.
