Question

What cab should I get for my Triaxis-20/20 rack?

It's finally time to complete my rig. I currently own a MB Triaxis and a MB 20/20 and I'm a bit confused as to what kind of cab should I get to go with them. I'm undecided between a stereo 2x12 or two individual 1x12's but actually, my main concern regards the speakers wattage. My poweramp delivers 20 watts per channel, does that mean that if I buy a 200 watts 1x12 cab then I will be losing part of my tone? Do you guys have any suggestions?

Help me out!

Re: What cab should I get for my Triaxis-20/20 rack?

I think the rule is that it is always safe to have speakers rated 1.5-2 times the amp wattage (depends if you're planning to crank the power amp or not). So if your power amp delivers 20W/channel you'd probably want at least two 40W speakers. Something like two 60W speakers should be more than enough. I suggest two 1x12 cabs. You can run them stereo, and if you need to take your rig to a gig/practice/studio, you can just take the rack and one 1x12 cab.

Virtually all speakers on the market can handle 20 watts of power safely. Buy which cab and speaker combination that you like the tones of.

Check out Avatar speaker cabs at www.avatarspeakers.com. Great prices on cabs loaded with either Celestion or Eminence speakers.

I would go with the two 1x12's and load them with different low wattage speakers. (Mojo BV-30H and the Celestion Greenback for example.) That way you will be able to really hear the difference in each speaker and if you ever choose to run a wet/dry set up you will be ready to go. You may want to look into different speaker cabinets as well. Choosing two different cabs will offer move variety. (Bogner Cube/ CAA 1x12/ Port City 1x12 Wave/ Mojotone 1x12) It all depends on what sound you are going for. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I notice youre in Italy - that rules out Avatar completely, and most of the brands mentioned by the Portcity guy - they are either not available, or completely overpriced. Same for Mesa brand cabs, overpriced in Europe.

I'd look at the ENGL 212VH stereo cab - same build quality (and very similar dimensions) as the Recto 2x12, but built in Europe, so much more affordable (under 600euro compared to about 800euro for the Mesa, which isnt stereo). Its loaded with V30s.

Maybe you can find a custom builder in Italy and get some built to order. That Engl looks nice for a 2x12 though.

Yeah there are some nice italian brands over here like BlackShark and Brunetti but I'd like to try a Mesa or an ENGL as well. We'll see what I end up buying...

THX guys for the help I finally got the watt issue, but I'm still undecided on the speakers I want to load my cabs with.

I tried some V30's a few days ago and I wasn't impressed at all. Too shrill for my ears (I like fat dark tones). Any suggestions....?

Hey Zero, I would highly suggest checking out the Boogie 1x12 theile cabs. They are the smallest and also best sounding cabs I've ever used. They sound monsterous. No need at all to have a 4x12 or even a 2x12. Especially with the EV speakers. Seriously, if you closed your eyes you'd never think all that sound was coming from a 1x12.

If you buy new, they don't come with EVM-12L's anymore, but you could always buy one and swap it out with the 90 watt celestion.

If you're looking for used, I've seen some really good deals on clean, EV loaded ones off the 'bay too. Like around $250-300 in the US.

Try one out if you can.

Re: What cab should I get for my Triaxis-20/20 rack?

The Mesa 1x12s are indeed very cool. I would have gotten a pair have I had the cash and if they were more easily available. They are about 450 euros new in Germany, so it's probably similar in Italy.

I don't think Celestion has a similar thing on their website, but Eminence has a great set of clips of all their speakers, which should help you with your choice:

http://www.eminence.com/soundclips.asp

I think your choice would depend on whether you are playing more high gain stuff or not. I have an Eminence Governor in my custom cab, and I like it, but I wouldn't think of it as well suited for high-gain sounds (I use mostly clean and lightly overdriven blues/fusion tones).
