What do you think about Dimarzio Steve's Special?
I was thinking about getting these for my RGA121 for cleaner shred tone.
I normally play with a bit more midrange, and the treble cut by a fair bit.
Is there something better for clearer/cleaner shred tone?

I'm getting this pickup too for my RG560. I've done a ton of research and I found that it is one of the highest rated pickups on Harmony Central and in the musician friend reviews.
From what I hear I like it too. I haven't seen anything bad about it anywhere. If you want to get a good idea of the sound just listen to Petrucci play anything after Images and Words but before Octavarium.

Re: What do you think about Dimarzio Steve's Special?
it's my current favorite
bridge pickup
, and the incredible clarity even with heavy distortion is what i like best about it. i have it in MANY of my guitars, including the ones i use on stage. my current fave
neck pickup
, btw, is the d-activator neck. i think they pair very well together.

It's a really clear pickup, but to some, it doesn't cut through well enough because of the lack of midrange.

Re: What do you think about Dimarzio Steve's Special?
Thanks guys I think I will go for it.
Is the D-activator the only hot neck pickup? are the any other neck pups that go well with it?
Also I didn't realize we had a pickup forum if some one could move the thread that would be great.

Re: What do you think about Dimarzio Steve's Special?
it'll go well with a whole ton of neck pickups, the paf pro and air norton are two other favorites. john petrucci was using the steve's special /
air norton combo
for a long time. i was using the paf pro before i checked out the d-activator. an air zone would work, if you wanted a really warm jazzy sort of tone from the neck pickup, or even a regular tone zone. a humbucker from hell would work if you wanted the exact opposite haha. it's a very bright pickup, and in terms of output is pretty mild, but it does sound awesome in the
neck position
.
