What does Satriani really play?

Found the following picture on the net.

http://www.online-discussion.com/Cor...c539d51909e478

Whats the point of having a signature amp when you play several others too and maybe don`t even use it as your main amp? Read he recorded Flying in a Blue Dream with a Mesa Boogie- ok that was before his Peavey times. Gives kind of an impression that he is not quite satisfied with his own creation or maybe its not versatile enough or....

Re: What does Satriani really play?

Its not that uncommon.
I read that EVH just used the pre amp of the 5150 and ran it into the power amp of his old Marshalls, and Im willing to bet Vai doesnt just use the Legacy for everything he does. Endorsements are little more than another source of income for people. Actually in Guitar One, there is an interview with Reb Beach, who was an Ibanez endorsee back in the day, and in the article he says that he used his Suhr on all the old recordings.

Re: What does Satriani really play?

Well, look at it this way - if you are even a moderately successful player who has been around for a while, you are most likely going to have quite a few guitars, amps and stompboxes floating around - when you get into the studio, aren't you going to take as much gear as you can to give you maximum flexibility? Perhaps in those sessions, the Boogie simply sounded the best in that environment - even the JSX may have been designed more to give Joe the sound he wants to hear on stage, rather than what he wants to achieve in the studio.....

That picture was taken about 5 years ago I presume. He went through a period where he was mentioning Cornford in interviews.

Re: What does Satriani really play?

Cool thread...Satriani has used some bizarre combinations of things over the years. Not of this Earth was record using a small gorilla practice amp,Surfing with the Alien had all kinds of stuff. I hate to use the old cliche: "The sound is in your hands" buts in Joe's case its amazing how hes used all kinds of rigs over the years and always sounded like himself. I saw Joe twenty years ago and he was using stompboxes/marshalls, then Marshalls/rack gear(tube driver,2290 delay,Eventide Harmonizers) and recently saw the G3(back to Boss stompboxes/now Peaveys). I need all the help I can get gear wise....the Vais,Satrianis and Gilberts of the world sound like themselves thru a practice amp. Maybe Joe just gets bored like we all do eventually and seeks out something newer, better, different? I think the coolest thing we can learn from Joe is to take chances ,try something new..Joes been on the road for twenty years and shows no signs of slowing down. Look at George Lynch...hes an endorsement whore and changes amps like underwear and always sounds like himself.

Re: What does Satriani really play?

you can use whatever you want in the recording studio , and in fact steve vai does use many amps in the studio , for some rythem tracks with 7 strings i belive he said he used a mesa or two and he is listed on mesaboogie.com as a user of thier amps .

the only thing that matters is if you look like your using them live , and even then you dont have to really use them

You are right. Steve Vai is actually listed on the Mesa side as a Mesa artist. But when you click on the link a link to Dave Weiners and not Vais homepage pops up.
Regarding the thing Vodoo child stated that the picture is 5 years old and that Joe was into Cornford amps in the past. I think thats not right. Joe Satriani is actually listed with a picture on the Cornford homepage as a Cornford artist: http://www.cornfordamps.com/launch.html
Besides that i read that he had done much of the recent recording with Cornford. Sorry but i find that confusing. Whats the point of having a signature model when everyone knows that you either way use almost every other brand beside that. Or put it like that: Officially you are pretending to use your signature model for commercial interests (because Peavey is capable of paying a lot more than Cornford) but inofficially you are playing the 4 K boutique amps.

Re: What does Satriani really play?

I was looking at a Cort guitar once. The MGM-1. Matt Guitar Murphy sig. model. So then I did a little research and found an interview with Matt where they asked him about his guitars. he went on and on about Gibsons and how they always just felt right to him. Then the interviewer mentioned the Cort MGM-1 model and he was like.. "um, yeah I like that guitar a lot too." LOL.

no in an interview he said he would use them on backing tracks , and i am sure he still has a bogner or two and some of his old marshalls as well. I know for a fact that joe uses many many different amps in the studio , he even said so at the time he was working on his peavey deal , the objective of the peavey deal was to get his basic tone so everything would sound OK , besides i still think he uses his preamps and just runs in the peavey's clean .

the guy from lamb of god is endrosed by framus but he really uses mesa mark 4s like the other dude does , all the stage amps are just that stage amps , nothing more then props , it comes down to money more then what sounds good.

You are sureley right about that. But i referred to the picture on the Cornford homepage which labels him as a "Cornford artist"+ i read that he actually used Cornford to some of the recordings of his last CD.

Re: What does Satriani really play?

That picture (on the Cornford homepage) was taken on the exact same day. 5 years ago.

At the time, Paul Cornford had been developing a 100watter for Joe. Joe was using a Hurricane proto in the studio (alongside a regular Hurricane), and a 50watter that Paul had given him in 2001.

He used the amps then, im sure he uses them now, alongside the Peavey, Boogies, old Marshalls, Fenders, whatever.

Joe has tonnes of amps and uses whatever he wants. No biggie

Re: What does Satriani really play?

I met Joe at G3 this year and he said that he was happy with the Peavey Amp and that he went out of his way to make sure it was what he wanted (not his exact words but as close as I can remember.) He used the JSX live during the show, mic'd into the auditorium's sound system.
