What guitar effects to get?

Hi there. I have never really owned any kind of effects apart from a Cry Baby wah. So I thought I might invest in something.

At the moment i currently have a RG570--Marshall MG30. Pretty basic set-up, but it suffices.

What im after mainly is some great distortion effects as I mainly play a lot of Metallica and Pantera type metal, but id like so nice smoother tones also.. I don’t know hardly anything about effects, types of pedals/units, pros/cons etc.

I was looking the other day at a magazine that had the Line 6 Guitar DM4 in and it looked promising. It seems to be what im after, but that’s pretty much all ive seen, so I may be missing some other great stuff.

Any suggestions would be great.

Cheers

I'd recommend the Boss OD-10 or whatever. The multi-distortion thing-y. My friend has one, and it's quite useful and quite versatile (even has a boost feature).

I can recommend the Line6 MM-4 modulation modeler. It has a great assortment of flanger, chorus, phase shift, uni-vibe, tremelo and rotating speaker effects. You can tweak and program 4 effects to be selected by the footswitches.

I've been using one for over a year now, and the only drawback for me is that you can only use 1 effect at a time.

I recommend Boss MT-2. My gears are: RG570, Marshall MG15CDR, MT-2, similar to yours. MT-2 can create metallica tone easity, so I often use to play some stuff ranging from classic metal to black metal, no problem! I also combine a half of Marshall's overdrive with 1/4 MT-2's distortion to get a smooth, clear distortion tone to play Joe Satriani's stuffs.
Hope this can be helpful!

Im really just after some distortion at the moment. But seeing as money is tight, and the fact that most things guitar wise are so expensive im after somthing like a distortion modeller that offers a large selection of overdrives/distortions to chose from.

I doubt it will be long before i invest in some other type of effects, but currently distortion is on the top of my list.

Am i also right in saying that to replicate some of the most famous distortion sounds that a amp modeler would be needed? Or would a disortion pedal give me the flexablity to find the certain tones, as well as distortion?

Which has kind of made me think about somthing like a PODxt. Although out of my price range that dosnt bother me. Finding a second hand one shouldnt be too much hassel
