What happens if I change those two? - I mean the pickups

I have an RG520 and plan on changin the pickups for Dimarzio's soon. But the thing is that it will cost me about $160, so what i wish to know is.........HOW DIFFERENT WILL THEY BE FROM THE STOCK P/U's ?
Will they effect the tone that much? Is it really worth it?

The 'rig' is fairly simple: a Laney LC30 [you know, the LC15's bigger steroid brother]. That's it, maybe and o/d pedal and Bogner 4x12 cab will be added this summer.

I was thinking of an Air Norton [bluesy high gain lead stuff with excellent harmonics] and a Tone Zone in the bridge [for shred and typical rocking, excellent harmonics also needed and picking response].

I changed my 550's bridge to an EVO and never really noticed much difference.

My fears exactly. What amp do you use?

Keith-
You could try buying pickups used online...much less investment, and you can always resell at little or no loss. *Might be worth it to see for yourself.

I don't think you can go too wrong with your first selections, Air Norton/Tone Zone, two great pickups, that's if you think they'd be suited to your sound, I know they are to mine and that's exactly what's goin' in the guitar I'm building, although I think the Tone Zone is better suited to denser woods to make full use of it. (just MEO (my ears opinion))

Also consider....(wait for it 'cos I always say it)... Breeds!

Excellent pickups in both neck and bridge, I can coax quite a lot of different sounds from them, they really are very versatile.

To answer your original question, pickups are like amps, it's all very personal, a lot of them don't differ too much at all, they have very subtle differences, it's best to narrow it down to 2 or 3 options and then take advantage of Dimarzio's exchange policy

Best of luck.
