There are four Marhsallesque preamps worth trying:
Bogner Fish
CAE 3+ SE
Egnater IE4
Egnater M4

Although yes, those all rock, they are all ridiculously expensive and/or hard to find.

Re: What preamp for shred?

How hard do you want to shred, really?
I've been a fan of Zoom's extreme distortions for shred for quite a few years now.
They may not sound like a vintage valve amp, but the amount of gain you can get, and the extremely focused and fat tone it delivers... it's just great for shredding.
Here's some songs with the Zoom G9.2tt's extreme distortion ampmodel:

If you're after a MarkIII sound, Mesa/Boogie Studio or Quad preamp would be good choices. Absolute classics, both will do a great Mark-series sound (with a good 6L6 poweramp). The Studio is voiced similar to a IIC+, and the Quad has channels based both on the IIC+ and the III. Fantastic preamps, and both will sound completely different (much better ) than your Rectifier...

This can get very awesome shred distortion sounds. +1 here. i've owned a FJA "high gain" modded one for a while and have been able to get many many different tones from it. Run mine into a mesa 50/50 and 2 1x12s and it's very full sounding and powerful.

H & K Access - A little pricey, but worth it!
Engl 430 - Very good Metal Pre , and for an Engl, affordable

IMO, Triaxis is nowhere close to a Marshall, on any of its channels. I had one and that's why I sold it. It doesn't have the upper mids presence of a Marshall, and that's critical for shred. Nice Mark-ish tones though.

Re: What preamp for shred?

And IE4 (the Rocktron flavor - pre-Rocktron commands a ridiculous markup, given that it's basically the same thing) is neither expensive nor hard to find.
