What's the most money you can spend for a mediocre amp?

Hey - I've been looking into a lot of amplifiers lately. And while a lot of amps sound great (and seem to justify the price tag) others just seem to be disappointing. So - fun question - what's the most money you can spend on an amplifier that sounds like "any old" amplifier - as in there really isn't anything to write home about? Let's keep this to amps you've tried (or decent sound clips), and not just based on ****ty youtube videos.

Randall RT100. $800 for the muddiest, darkest sounding piece of sh*t tube amp I've ever played.

Re: What's the most money you can spend for a mediocre amp?

I've got a few.. I've owned a Peavey Windsor, which was pretty good, Then I put an pre-amp pedal in front of it and it was like a Marshall. no crap. I paid 299 for it. I also have a late 60s -early 70's Kustom 250 ..silver tuck and roll. Even though its solid state, its a great "clean slate" amp to add pedals to. I have a Carvin V3 now. I only paid 400 for it and its the best thing ever. So I guess, it depends on what kind of deal you can get. You can find a decent tube head for pretty cheap if you ask me. plus if you are adding pedals to it, you can make it sound plenty good.

Haha that's the opposite of what I had asked - what's the MOST money you can spend for a "meh" amp. $800 isn't bad, but I think we can do better.

Two Rock amps are nothing to write home about and they cost $2000+. I wouldn't call them mediocre but they do not leave a lasting impression.

The Hiwatt transistor amps are pretty shocking and were rather pricey (but in australia, even the absolutely rubbish is pricey) when a mate of mine was interested in them about a year or so back.

Yeah two-rock stuff is super expensive - though I played a Dr. Z maz 18 (the one I currently own) through one of their 212 cabinets and it ruled. As silly as it is, I'm probably gonna save up and buy one of their cabs.

But yeah - a classic reverb head is close to $5 grand
