What's the best software/setup for making Techno? - It's for

My friend wants me to set him up to make some heavy duty techno. He can play guitar and sing, but wants to get into the home production. And he's asked me for advice. He has a computer already, but what else does he need?

Software?

Computer specs?

Peripherals?

He also mentioned wanting a drum machine program. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Eric

Check out http://www.clintatthecontrols.com He's got his setup listed under the F.A.Q. section. *One program that's very usefull is Sonic Foundry's Acid. *Even the free version (Acid XP - downloadable from http://www.acidplanet.com) is very good (I use it) the only disadvantage to the free version is the inability to add effects and to burn directly to CD in it (or, at least these are the only non-functioning features I've run into so far). *Hope that helps!

Another couple of apps to check out are Reason and ReBirth from Propellerheads. They emulate some really cool hardware (like analog synths, drum machines and effects units) in a completely software environment.

They also do a VST plugin called ReWire, which lets you sync them with any VST-capable digital audio workstation app.

ReCycle is great for working with loops, but Acid Pro 3 is the multitrack type environment that is king for techno

I second the acid pro3 vote. This program *really is the best one that is targeted for that style although you can do more with a program that is not loop based It would take alot more work.

Thanks for the answers everybody. I checked all these things out, found them all, and got them all for my friend. I'm basically giving him a laptop as a gift with these programs on it.

One more question: do I need any peripherals (other than a mic)? Maybe a master keyboard or something? This is a new Sony Vaio laptop with a decent sound card, so I need to know what to get outside of the computer system itself and the software...

Hmm...nice set of speakers? *A mouse helps (I hate those trackball, trackpad, whatever things. lol). *Other than that, I dunno. *

I have to chime in with Darren here. Reason is amazing for House/Techno/Trip/HipHop. The best way to go if you want to do it 100% PC imo.

Amazing stuff.
