When a 100 watt head just isn't enough...

http://www.fender.com/products/show.php?partno=2282000

IMO, this is just freaking stupid. I think that they're just trying to sell to kids that are impressed by high wattage, and don't realise that when they buy something this loud, the soundman is just going to b!tch, and tell you to turn it down anyway. (WOW, was THAT a run-on sentence or what? )

I've been using a 30 watt Marshall head (AWESOME!), and I STILL don't get to turn it up past 4 0r 5 on most nights.

I know, you get more clean headroom... But, I seriously doubt, that anyone that bought an amp called "The Metalhead" would be very concerned with anything like that.

Yeah, and at 8 ohms like most guitar cabs, this sucker's only probably about 250-300 watts, like the rest of the newer solid state gear. The big problem here is the 2 ohm operation with cheaply manufactured gear. The chances of blowing this thing up are pretty high, IMO.

With solid state amps, it's all about the headroom. You don't want to push transistors into breakup territory... the results aren't pleasing to the ear. So to keep them working comfortably in their clean range, you need to have all that headroom. The Line 6 HD147 is 300 watts, and the Marshall Mode Four is 350. All that power is not really meant to be used, but to ensure that the usable power stays as clean as possible.

Re: When a 100 watt head just isn't enough...

My father, who is an electrical engineer, tells me that most amps' wattage rating is based on a "peak" rating not on a more accurate "average" rating, which explains why mt 50 watt Marshall simply drowns my 200+ watt Fender Twin...

Re: When a 100 watt head just isn't enough...

Yes, I understand about clean headroom. But, you just do not need THAT much, with modern PA systems. Nowadays, you can play with a small combo(or heck, just go direct), and mic it up. That is, as long as you don't have a moron for a soundman... Which does happen all too often.

I still say that they're using this to sell to kids that are impressed by the high wattage.

What do you guys want to bet that Fender is using this amp to test the waters for other high-gain "heavy" amps?

Cut off the two outer legs of the M in "MH" and you get the last name initials of one of their latest endorsers, who recently gave up his previous guitar and amp deal, and is possibly looking for a new signature amp.

Re: When a 100 watt head just isn't enough...

You might be right, Darren. They'de get a HUGE boost in their amp sales, with an EVH amp. Not that they have a hard time moving amps, but their *high gain* stuff never did that much for them. The Prosonic was nice, but it didn't stick around for too long. I'm sure that was because of it not selling as well as the rest of their amp line-up.

Just wait and see what happens at summer NAMM.
