which distortion box should i buy?? - suggestions???

my amp head is a laney gh-50(all tube), and i was wondering what distortion box i should put in front of it to get that kind of *korn, fear factory, distortion, also i would like know what i would set my amps eq's to in order to achieve this sound(i.e. scooped mids) what are scooped mids anyway?? mids all the way up, or all the way down??

any help is appreciated

You want your mids down and your treble and bass up. As for pedals I know Head uses a DOD metal distortion and Munky uses Ibanez tube screamers and he also uses a big muff but not for his main sound. I know they also like Marshall 1960 4x12 cab, but I think what you might be looking for is the recto sound and since I've never heard a Laney maybe someone else can help you more than I can.

A Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi is pretty much the basic old-school KoRn sound (they recorded with them), and with a lil more mids+treble Fear Factory is very attainable. You can buy re-issues for dirt cheap ($50 or so) or go all out and buy an original for $100-300....the originals sound better, but not nessecarily too much better. A Boss Metal-Zone can achieve a wide range of distorion tones and is much more versital.....and for $89 they're well worth it. For the most part a Tube screamer won't provide the gain...so stay away. As far as DOD goes, they are cheap and not all that bad sounding, but reliability is a big issue. I would recommend a Boss Metal-Zone overall.....it'll be more useful when you want to cover more sounds than just KoRn, and they offer a good compromise between price, reliability, and sound.

I agree with UVmanMike, but I would also consider using a Boss GE-7 Equalizer pedal in addition with the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, this lets you sculpt the sound even more, especially helpful for scooping the mids to get that Fear Factory-ish sound.

I would recomend the Ibanez / Rocktron shark distortion itīs the best distpedal ever made.. itīs a 9ī5 *stombox that can be rackmounted and *footswitched and the distortion is increadable....thereīs no problem dialing in the Fear Facktory sound or the korn sound.....it also has hush noise reduction so itīs completly noiseless if u want it to

The big muff is not their base sound, I think only munky uses one. Also before you run out to buy a big muff keep in mind that Munky had his modified.

most people seem to have there big muff modified for either the smashing pumpkins or korn sound .......

dirt box for korn, FF etc etc that is a tougn one as they all use amp distortion (i believe) in the studio i think all of them have used pods so that might be the answer

I know Dino uses a line6 flextone head on the recto setting. So just buy a pod.

That scooped mid sound might sound cool when you're just jamming on your own at low volume, but at a concert or band practice, it's the most annoying sound in the world. All you'll be able to hear is SSSCHCHSHCHSHSHHCSHCHSHCHSHC.
Just don't get too carried away, especially if you get a graphic EQ pedal too. Mid's add so much definition, and you can actually understand what's being played.

Has anyone tried Zoom's latest Tri-metal pedal? I heard it was similar to Boss' metalzone with better EQ capabilities (???). I haven't heard one myself but I plan on getting one soon but i need opinions beforehand.

Just get a metal zone dude. *The stuff you're describing is what the metal zone does very well....and the metal zone doesnt do well at most things.
