get a jcm800 + a decent gain/distortion pedal then....

like the marshall guv'nor or the boss blues-driver2 (my choices...).

the old ibanez tube screamers are pretty nice, too... though i don't use this one too often nowadays

Any of these amps are not made for bedroom levels, it ain't gonna happen. Get a small practice amp for under $100 for the bedroom stuff.

As far as heads go they are all good choices, I just picked up a Laney GH50L head that is pretty killer bang for the buck too.

It is possible to play at low volumes with that kind of amp, you can buy an Koch Loabox (marshall has 1 to), with the loadbox you can play at low volumes with a good sound!

Yes the sovereign is also great.. but a little bit too expensive.
on Saturday i bought the Line 6 Flextone III... the tone was all ok but .. on Sunday mornin the amp sucked up and didnt let turn on. So.. went back to the store.. just capped the Screamer and now im happy

Re: Wich amp should i take?

Hey guys sorry to bump an old thread but I'm looking into the ENGL Screamer or (if worth it) toast almost twice as much on the Sovereign.

I want to play high gain stuff and I'm a bit afraid that the Sovereign has the clear edge on this whereas the Screamer might need some pedals ? On the other hand the Sovereign has 100 watts and the Screamer 50.
This is sensitive for me as I want to gig with friends (drummer included) but at the same time I'd like to practice at home.. which is a flat. I wonder if any of these amps sound good at low volumes.

I would rather not having to install any power soakers..

Re: Wich amp should i take?

I think a normal peavey 5150 is the best option, peavey are ridiculously popular in your chosen genre and it has buckets of tight gain. However regardless of which amp you are going through i would definitely suggest putting in a Maxon OD808 in front of the amp with these settings:

Drive = 0 or 7 o'clock
Tone = Somewhere around from 10-12 o'clock
Level = probably around two o'clock, but just turn the pedal on and off till it is the same volume as your amp by itself

Marshall amps are pretty bright but i think Splawn are pretty damn sexy. They are pretty much hot rodded and heavily modded marshalls done very well. One of these or a JCM800 with the maxon would do the trick.

If your tone STILL isn't chuggy enough or tight, put a 10 band MXR eq in the effects loop with the bass boosted for some tight boom.
