Yet Another "WHAT AMP ?!?!" Thead.

So as the title suggests, I'm looking for an amp!

I play mostly '80s style metal, but also looking for something with a deep/rich clean sound.

Anything you can recommend to narrow the search?
Thanks.

How much $$$ do you want to spend? How much wattage do you need? Combo or head and cabinet?

Anything to $2000 will be in the price range. Wattage doesn't really matter, anything 50+ is good. Half stack is probably what I'll settle on...

bogner xtc
peavey 5150 11 0r 6505 + clean channel not fantastic but not bad ...
marshall jvm ,,,, but need good noise gate
peavey jsx
blackstar are bringing out a new range of heads that look very very interesting , but not released yet .
if you are bothered about your clean sound then 100 watts might be better for the extra headroom

Here's another question.

Looking for something new or used?

I say check out either a Marshall DSL or Vintage Modern.
Another good option is the new Peavey 3120 head. Great tone, three channels and under $1400.

JSX or 5150 would be right up your alley.

A Splawn Quick Rod (boutique Marshall JCM800 style amp) is $1850 new, but that's just a head. However, I think you can get one used for as low as $1200-$1400, leaving enough room to order a matching 4x12 cab. These amps just rule. Way better than anything you'll get from Peavey, or Marshall for that matter.

What about a JCM 800? I dunno how much they cost, but I've heard many good things about them

The 2-channel JCM 800's clean channel aren't very clean. I wouldn't recommend them if you need a pristine clean sound.

I'd recommend a Splawn Quick Rod or a Mesa Stiletto.

I would've thought a JCM800 would be the amp of choice for an 80's sound. Add in a Tube Screamer, Digital Delay & a Super Chorus and it's the 80's as I remember them.

All that's left is a bit of hair farming and you're on your way :-)

Something from Marshall would probably be very good. Ive heard that the Carvin X100B nails 80s tones but you could probably do better in your price range. If you can get your hands on the splawn go for it.
