Re: Andy Timmons Clinic at Matt's Music!

It was awesome! We had about 60 people here, some drove in from as far as CT and ME! The clinic ran 2-1/2 hours, followed by a long meet and greet, followed by beer and pizza for Andy and the staff here. He'd play a few songs, take questions from the audience, play a few more songs, answer some more questions... this went on for the whole night.

I personally thought it was a smashing success. Andy was smiling throughout the whole clinic and when someone asked him about this, his response was that "some nights, everything is just right... the sound, the amps, the audience". It all seemed to come together for him.

There were lots of questions and they were all excellent ones about Andy, his gear, why he uses Boogie amps, his now discontinued Ibanez AT100, some of his musical experiences... one guy even asked about his diet and lifestyle. No matter what the question, Andy did a superb job of answering it and was extremely comfortable speaking to the audience. Being a GIT grad myself, I've seen my share of clinics and I'd have to put this one toward the top of my list.

Being so close to Berklee, we had a bunch of students here and Jon Finn (also an Ibanez guy, as well as a Berklee instructor and the guitarist in the Boston Pops) attended. Andy made mention at one point that it was a little nerve wracking knowing there were so many great guitarists in the audience and that the "note police" were out in full force. Ha! He had us all laughing out loud a bunch of times.

Really just an exceptional night, I'm happy I was able to be part of it. Pics are on my site if you want to check them out.

Re: Andy Timmons Clinic at Matt's Music!

Will do sir! Sounds excellent. I went to the one in New York and it was exactly like what you described, pretty much to a t. Lots of humorous moments...first an Orange rep walked in and talked to Andy and Andy goes "hey man, I have love for you no matter what amp company you represent" (this was in a Mesa/Boogie SHOWROOM lol), and then some guy with a helmet started leaving and Andy goes "I hope it wasnt my music!" and the guy started talking about how Andy was turned up too loud and told this long story about how Segovia used to play to huge theaters with no amplification and could be heard perfectly all the way in the back...then Andy responded with "yeah, Segovia's the man!" to which the heckler replied "You know who's really the man? Jesus Christ" and the entire room held in chuckles while this guy continued. He wasnt mean or anything but it was very annoying because people just wanted to hear andy play and talk and not listen to this schmuck. Either way it was very funny and Andy of course handled the matter like a total gentleman. I got my guitar signed and some cds and posters, and Andy even played my custom axe! Got it on video, haha, definitely a memory that'll last a lifetime because he's my absolute favorite guitarist. Do you happen to have the setlist for the songs he played? Im curious if its the same as what we got. We got:

Falling Down, Cry for you, Electric Gypsy, this funny quick medley of all the songs audience members shouted out requests for, Helipad, Gone, Super 70s, Pink Champagne Sparkle, Deliver Us, and Ghost of You (i think that was all of em).

Re: Andy Timmons Clinic at Matt's Music!

I actually don't know his material well enough to know all the names. He was using backing tracks, so I'm sure he probably played the same songs here. He also did the medley after people had shouted out requests, which was funny because he wasn't really prepared for some of them.

I think one of the funniest moments was when Jon Finn raised his hand to ask a question about the way Andy goes about learning alot of new material quickly for a gig. Andy said humorously "Jon Finn, I have absolutely nothing I can impart onto you, what could you possibly want to know from me?" It was hilarious...

For a really good intro to him, i suggest the "best of plus 4 new songs" that Vai put out on his favored nations label. The disc is called "That was then, this is now". It's amazing. His latest "Resolution" is great too. I have every one of his solo albums and theyre all fantastic.

I kind of wanted to go to this - Andy is an absolute master, and has tone to die for, to boot... I wish I could have gotten down there. :/

Did you take any pictures, Matt?

Jon Finn is a Berkle instructor/guitarist for the boston pops. Amazing player and super nice guy. Youtube him and check out his website.

And yes, Andy plays (essentially) the same set at each clinic, based on when I saw him and the reviews I've read.
