George Lynch Clinic in South Florida

Sam Ash is having George Lynch do a free clinic May 31(THIS THURSDAY) at their Broward location: 5460 West Sample Road
Margate Fl

The clinic sponsors are ESP and Randall. Wondering if any of our Florida members
will be present?

I wonder if they have any of the better Randall Tube heads-the Bruce Egnater designed stuff just kills with the right modules. Last time I saw George he just plugged into whatever was available and jammed a few tracks. Lynch's sound is really in his hands.

Agree with that. Not to start the whole "where does tone come from" debate again, but Lynch would sound like Lynch through a Squire strat and a Pignose amp if thats all he had.

Not me. Gotta work today. Now, if he were doing it tomorrow - my day off - I would be there. If any of you go please take some pics, maybe a camera-phone vid too if you can!

Yeah well... he is not the monster player he used to be. if I had the chance I would ask him what's with all that detuned crap he has been playing lately and whatever happened to his incredible solos???

Hypertension, heavy drugs for psychosis plus anabolic steroids don't bode well on one's personality. He's known to fist fight with his techs and roadies because of his "issues". He rumbled on stage with his guitar tech in Houston, TX at "Backstage" on the Wicked Sensation tour.

These "issues" are how he earned the moniker "Mr. Scary".

Another case of mental/physical health issues wasting away a monumental musician.

Re: George Lynch Clinic in South Florida

Just got back from the clinic. Lynch was...well Lynch...his strong points were very strong-great vibrato and unconventional note choices. He had some problems early on with the backing tracks being in 440 tuning and his guitar being tuned a half step lower-he tuned up and soundchecked onstage. He was pretty loud which forced him to have to take all the guitar out of the monitors.
He was struggling to dial in a sound which is pretty rough considering he was promoting his signature Randall head. He finally got warmed up by the third instrumental and was sounding really good.
I left after the forth or fifth track because there was just no melody happening at all: George was just throwing in the kitchen sink into every song and overplaying every chance he got. The cool thing about George at his best is
that crazy unpredictable quality his playing has-the problem is when given space he just can't seem to let it go by without cramming a bunch of meaningless notes in. The best Lynch playing is when he's in a band situation and has to get to the point-all the classic Lynch solos are fairly short and very interesting. Without vocals or anyone to keep him check he plays so much that it undermines everything. I went to a Thai restaurant in the mall and had dinner with a friend. We went out and the store was closed but to his credit George was signing autographs and quite a few guitars for his fans-there were still a very large number of people who stayed in the store after the clinic. As for the steroid comments, he got to be close to fifty years old and hes significantly smaller than the Lynch Mob era(that was over 15 years ago) but in really good shape..hormone replacement therapy? Who knows? Who Cares? Whatever he's doing I wish he could convince Van Halen and Schenker to take better care of themselves.
I can't speak for George or anyone else for that matter but its got to be really hard going from magazine covers and large international arena tours to small clubs then reunion tours with people you can't stand anymore to finally just doing clinics cause you can't get large enough sales of your music to make touring a financially viable thing. Considering all he's been through over the years: multiple divorces, band breakups, having no major record deal/distribution network, having no one interested in your new material, losing your identity musically by jumping on trends"Nu metal/ detuned guitars"..etc..etc. Who can honestly say the could've done a better job of staying in the public eye than Lynch? George is always at the trade shows and embraced new technology by giving online lessons("Guitar Dojo"). I don't know anyone his age thats constantly on the road promoting himself. Whether I like his playing anymore or not is irrelevant-Lynch gets my respect for not throwing in the towel during hard times and not being set in his ways. Trust me if he was only in it for the money and fame he would have quit a long time
ago during the grunge/Nirvana years or the Korn/Greenday/Marilyn Manson era.

Re: George Lynch Clinic in South Florida

I think Lynch suffers type-casting. Kinda like an actor that's really well known for just one role. They shine very bright in the one spot they're known for, but once outside of that they aren't as popular, even lose popularity.

I've always loved Lynch's playing. I've got every Dokken CD and I think every Lynch CD. The boy can play, but I think he's just more known for Dokken, and the times of Dokken have long since past.

He needs Al Gore to help resurrect his image. LOL. I heard Lindsey Lohan asked Gore for his help to get her image straightened up. George needs to reinvent himself musically. He needs to step out of the box and do some things that gets him recognized. Then all of the sudden release a new solo CD that nobody knew he was working on, and have absolutely the best of the best Lynch playing on there. He needs his own "Passion and Warfare".

Then maybe hook up as the guitarist of a well known band. Get seen. Get heard. And then before he even realizes it he's re-emerged as a GuitarGod for today's youth. Him on a G3 tour would be the cat's meow.

I'm glad he's doing his dojo thing. It's new and different, but I don't think being Mr. Miagi for the rest of this life is going to cut it and it certainly isn't going to increase his popularity.

At any rate, I hate I missed him yesterday. I didn't know about his drug or substance problem. I remember thinking to myself when I saw him next to that Randall stack in the magazine, "Homey's been juicing.....but he looks damn good." He might be on the sauce, but at least on the outside he looks healthy and fit. Anyways, I'm rambling.....

Re: George Lynch Clinic in South Florida

I doubt he gives a hoot about his popularity at this point. He's just going with the flow, doing what he loves and having fun GO George..WOO HOOOOO!!!

eel, cool pics!!! Thanks for sharing

BTW - court, do you mind if I start editing your posts and change the color to ~purple~ rather than pink??

It's easier to read than pink text, and yet still retains the girly qualities
