2101 Recording Advice needed

My preamp is a Digitech GSP2101, and I've used/loved it for ages now.

Thing is, it's an absolute miserable #$@#$ to get to sound even remotely decent using the line outs on it. The cab emulators, to my ear, do just about as close to "absolutely nothing" as you can get without being completely useless.

So I guess my question here is, if anyone has a 2101 - what are your patch/param/etc settings to get a decent distorted tone out of it? Everything I come up with is either super thin or dog-deafening-bright.

I love it through my cabs, but I think I'm going to have to end up buying another preamp (GNX3 perhaps). I recorded This song, Midwinter with the GNX3 and it's _almost_ the tone I want. It'll do, anyhow.

If someone can enlighten me as to how to squeeze that out of the 2101, I'll fedex you a puppy. I can't mic my cabs, really - can't get loud enough in my apartment, and my amp's in a very bad-for-dynamics room.

Hmm, I have a GSP2101. I also haven't gotten a decent distorted sound out of it for direct recording. I haven't tried very hard though. I became sort of disenchanted with the distortion sounds of that box after becoming accustomed to some other stuff. Some great clean sounds on that box though. OTOH, my taste in distortion may be suspect... I love my little crate gx212, for instance. (Go ahead, laugh, I know you want to . )

I think maybe the best thing I got out of my GSP2101 is a pretty decent impression of that THX noise they used to play at the beginning of movies (you know where it says "The audience is listening" and there's a big swell, and then homer simpson's head explodes... )
