4x12 cab mic up
I've got a link here for the 4x12 mic'd up 6" away or so that i was having probs with.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/a.carbott/4x12%20test.mp3
This is the best I could get, better than just off the cab.
PS - Glen, Hope I'm allowed to post the link here, I think its relevant as this was discussed in the recording studio area of jemsite.
Thanks.

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
it does sound good. if you want, drop a condensor to pick up the low end that your missing. otherwise, it sounds really good. i d.i. my stuff through the pod and i love my tones, but it doesn't sound like your doing any wrong with the way you have it now.

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
Thanks, cool. Glad to get some input. Maybe my ears were just to used to hearing it through a 4x12 that when hearing it through monitors, it sounded different, as I guess it would as the monitor cabs are alot smaller, so won't produce what a large cab will.
I'm looking to go for a Shure KSM range
condenser mic
, they can't be bad, Shure seem to be loved - as the SM57 is.

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
Sounds fine to me, classic mic'd Marshall sound. Play with the mic placement and you'll find that small adjustments in the distance and angle will make huge differences in the sound. Yeah, they do sound different recorded, that's why some people struggle to get sounds live that they hear on record, it's almost impossible because the sound on record went through a mic and "post-mic" processing. I usually mic a little closer than 6" and at a slight angle, YMMV, of course, I usually go through a hour or so of listening in headphones, moving the mic a hair, trying again, repeat, because the mic has gotten moved from the last time. I wish I had the room to crank up and do some good distance mic'ing too. Now that you have the sound recorded, you can play with compression, EQ, and all those other cool things that can eat up lots of time!

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
when i used to mic my 5150's, i had a full stack, so it was even worse for reproduction. you want that massive tone from a 4x12, even 8x12. studio monitors and headphones just won't be able to reproduce that. it becomes an apples and oranges situation when recording. don't feel bad, we all want to get that massive stack tone when we record.

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
sounds pretty good to me man. when i mic cabs i usually have the mic touching the grill of the cab....so maybe 2" away from the cone, pointing to the side of the cone so the mic is parallel to the floor. as you know you NEVER point the mic directly at the center of the cone. instead, it is pointing to the side of the cone where it meets the cab. move it around and experiment.
nowadays when i record i just layer my tracks for the huge sound using my
pod pro
going direct. killer sound! then a 3rd layer in the middle of the mix may be recorded with my cab so there is a mix of killer direct ins and mic'd cab. all 3 guitars layered split in stereo = huge fun.

Re: 4x12 cab mic up
What about putting multiple mics in front of it, in front of seperate speakers?
