Ableton Live

Does anyone here use this program? I just bought it and am just starting to watch the tutorials. I decided on Ableton based on a friend's experience with it who uses it for electronic music production.

Rather than a straight linear recording, it's set up more to use looped samples, which is what I was more interested in. My goal with it is mostly to create backing tracks that I can ultimately play over.

I've watched my friend use it and it's pretty amazing. Once you create the basic drum beat, you literally just drop other samples into the mix and it snaps them right to the beat. It also does time stretching extremely well, so if your sample doesn't totally match up to the beat, it corrects it.

Re: Ableton Live

Sounds cool!! I got a small midi controller as a gift and it came with a demo for Ableton. I should give it a shot!

Re: Ableton Live

I tried Ableton Live, and I just couldn't figure it out. It does seem to be geared more for electronic music. A guy at Guitar Center whipped up some phat beats in about 10 seconds. It took me about 10 hours to figure out that I couldn't figure it out.

Re: Ableton Live

Ableton is a great DAW, mostly for creating electronic music, but can be used in live situations for backing tracks. I haven't used it in a live situation yet, but have dabbled with figuring out how it works. If you have a midi/usb foot controller like the Roland Fc-300 or Behringer FCB1010 and using another little piece of software BOMES Midi translator you can program Ableton to respond to scene changes using assigned pedals on the foot board. So you can program a start /stop, Verse, Chorus or next pedal etc. Check out youtube on Ableton Backing Tracks and Ableton BOMES Midi Good Luck!

Re: Ableton Live

I have used Ableton Live a lot since I made my post in this thread.

As I see it, if you are looking for a DAW, start looking with the cheap.

What I really mean is, I tried to make live my main DAW, but it lacked so many features for multi track record. For example, it has incredibly poor metering and does not have a take system.
It is good for a lot of things, and has a lot of unique things as well. Even with that, when you can try Reaper for as long as you like for free (please buy the 60$ license), I see no reason (hehe... reason...) to drop hundreds on any other DAW.

If you are strictly a DJ, Live is amazing! In the world of Rock (and most other genres), Live is just really lacking in a lot of important places.
I still recommend you try everything, but for now I have made my decision.

Re: Ableton Live

Agree with Frank.
For what good DAW software costs--best to stick with Reaper.
