Although, you gotta be careful going that route... you don't want the best sounding speakers. Rather, you want the ones with the clearest reproduction, so you can realy hear what's wrong with the mix. So, while trusting your ear is importat, you gotta make sure you know what you're trusting it
with.
I'd suggest grabbing a few CD's that you think might be tough to reporoduce clearly- Vai's PAW is a good one, as it's a crystal clear mix with tons of layers, and that seven string has a lot of low end. Besides, it's instrumental, so the guys at the store can't use "obscene language" as a reason not to let you blare it.

I like
Devin Townsend for much the same reason- a lot of stuff going on, yet it's still transparent. I'd also grab something really open and raw sounding... acoustic and vocal, with a lot of space, just for the difference. And, if you can, grab a few of your own mixes. If you start hearing things that need to change, then you know you're on the right track.
