Audition was the new name Adobe gave Cool Edit Pro - the simplest DAW before REAPER came along.

Those are some of the best plugins I have used, especially the compressor, eq and delay.

I then spend an entire Saturday just figuring out how to do this without messing around on the guitar.

I found that once I'd nailed the basics on Reaper its super easy to use.

Also, a big monitor with a high resolution makes the whole thing easier as you can keep everything on the screen.
And one more.

Really, for the price, I don't think there's a reason to use anything else. I started with an, ahem, "borrowed" copy of Sonar, which was great, but after downloading the Reaper demo on a buddy's recommendation, I switched over for two reasons:

1.) It's just a great program. The routing options are absurd. You can route anything into anything - I don't even know where to begin, but it's nuts. The user-customization is off the charts too. On top of that, the workflow feels very natural, and it ships with a bunch of rather decent plugins. And, the kicker, it's really easy on system resources - it can load and open the last project in less time than Sonar 6 was loading.

2.) Their business model is just too cool. They offer two liscenses, a "professional" liscense at $250 (I think), and a "personal" liscense for $60. The personal liscense is intended for home hobbyists, educators, and anyone working professionally grossing less than $20k a year, while the professional liscense is for anyone grossing more than $20k a year recording music. And, there is absolutely no difference between the two - they price it so that even guys like me just screwing around in their bedrooms can have access to a really good audio recording program.

Hell, it's from the guys who brought us Winamp, which should say something. I'm a total convert.

Re: Basic recording software for PC?

I got my recording interface (Echo Audiofire 4, which I LOVE) a few months ago. I though that I'd be fine using the free copy of Mackie Tracktion. Well, turns out that Mackie is having some problems, and Tracktion hadn't been updated in over a year. So I switched to Reaper. The cool thing about Reaper is that it's community driven. Every change made is made for a purpose, often because of community suggestions/complaints. I love it.

Another vote for Reaper. Great piece of software and it's a good price and small! Sure it's complex, but it doesn't take much effort to learn the basics needed for recording.

Re: Basic recording software for PC?

I've recently ordered a copy of Sonar HomeStudio XL (latest version). I'm going to buy a new quad-core Desktop system with two hard drives to run dedicated and off-network. This sound like a good setup? I had an MBox with ProTools 7.2 and while the functionality was good, as everyone has noted it is EXTREMELY picky. The slightest thing breaks it, and it does not work on 64-bit systems. The thing that moved me to SONAR was that once I installed Internet Explorer 8 on my system, ProTools would no longer launch (Documented bug from Manufacturer). Evidently SONAR works on 64-bit, so I'm gonna try it out, but thanks to everyone for the Reaper info.

Cheers,

Race

Re: Basic recording software for PC?

Two applications that shouldn't be running alongside each other should be DAW and Internet.

I would run reaper instead and use a slipstreamed xp 32-bit install to get rid of the unnecessary garbage that comes bundled with the full blown install of xp pro. I have it running on my laptop (single core 2ghz processor) and I can fully boot into xp in 10 seconds ;-)
