Basic Recordings at home

I want to make a basic home recoding studio

specs on my pc
p4 2.0
256 mb ddr
20G HD
SB Audigy
( want to get a quality sound card, a seperate HD for recording, and maybe 256 more ram)
I want to record through my Shure sm57, I do not have a mic preamp.
Can someone explain it to me, would I need a mixer or anything else?
I would only be recording guitar and bass, no drums.
I don't need anything fancy just good quality gear but good for the money. I'm a new to all this and like to learn more about recording.

You will need a preamp. Lucky for you they have them in most mixers

What are the big difference between Delta 44 and Delta 66? Just the extra digital line out?
Also if I get a mixer it will act as a preamp right???
Which preamp will suit my needs?
I wouldn't be needing alot of channels since i'm just recording guitar and bass, and maybe with drum machine. And I can monitor with head phones right?

Yes. But If you buy the M-Audio card it has 2 pre's on it

I can't help you with that but I can help you with your computer. Ok upgrading ram is a great idea

but you have to know who makes and what model is your motherboard. But a typical price for a addition of 256 thus equaling 512 is around 50-60$ go to Crucial.com for good prices and always buy for a brand name (getting cheap ram is like getting a 333 when you can afford a 777lng

) . Ok hard drives first keep the one you have and get a better one (great piece of advice I know

but I just couldn't help it

) to get one you also incidentally need to know your motherboard make/model. After that it gets complicated but to syick to the basics... if your motherboard has RAID use mode 0 if not then forget about it. Enjoy

and going to get WT
or Seagate HD...
my MB is Gygabyte....

To check your hard drive take off the case (unscrew the panel) then unplug the cables from the back of your hard drive and unscrew 4 screws or if you have a newer computer you may be able to pop it out so take a look. You have to find out the interface so when you take out the hard drive it should say look for it. Hope this helps
