Best 4 or 8 track recorder under £300?

i want a 4-track recorder (or an 8-track if possible cheap).

been looking at tascam, boss and other makes.

i quite like the boss 8-track for £300ish.

so what would be the best 4-track recorder for under £300?
and would a digital one be better or a tape-recorder?

i plan on recording on 4-track, then putting mix onto PC for final "tarting" up.

thanks
matt

Get a digital. WHAT digital you get depends on your needs. I like that Fostex 8 that runs on batteries and writes to compact flash cards. But there are similar models from Korg, Roland, Zoom, Tascam... Do you need small size & portability?

size isn't a big issue, its not like a 4 or 8track is gonna be too big to be portable anyway.

it'll mainly be used in my room, but would be taken round a mates house if i ever need drums recorded.

One issue with smaller/cheaper machines is, they often only allow 2 tracks to be recorded at once. Even some 8 tracks have this limitation. Make sure if you want to lay down 4 drum tracks at once that you can.

I think a BOSS multi track is a good option.

I you ever had the idea, forget YAMAHA MD-8. There have in 80% problems with the MD driver and MD DATA carriers are around 20 $ and very hard to find now.

AND it's got an ancient (meaning poor sounding) version of ATRAC compression in it.
