Basically i need

Thumbs up

Re: Best Computer for Recording Music?

For that money you can buy a Pentium4 PC with a big HDD + 17" monitor and an external mixer (like the MLAN Yamaha 01x) and a few decent monitors to start with. Any decent music center should be able to provide you with a decent profitable package deal for that money. Try to get a package deal somewhere.

Pentium 4 = poopy! If you're considering a P4, don't. Get an AMD Athlon 64 instead. The A64 killed the P4, just like the Northwood P4C killed the Athlon XP.

But anyway. It doesn't matter so much about the processor, any semi-decent offering from Intel or AMD will do. What you need is a good sound card and a large hard drive. Oh, and at least 1GB RAM. I have an Auzentech HDA X-Plosion sound card which is really good, and not over the top expensive. Maybe you could consider that. And a hard drive of at least 160GB, preferably more because you'll be filling that thing in no time if working on songs and saving them as huge .wav files.

I'd just build a PC and concentrate on those things.

I'm not sure about the GNX4, I haven't tried it. There are some pretty decent modelers out there, though. The Behringer V-Amp Pro is pretty decent and pretty cheap if the GNX4 doesn't cut it.

A prescot P4 is just as fast and stable as an athlon. I think intel worst mistake was not drawing attention to the prescot / northwood difference.

Bah. PrescHot was horrible! And HOT! A64 runs way cooler, especially the 90nm parts for socket 939. BUT, the Prescott would do the trick, so just get the best processor for the money. Huh, guess that'd be an s939 A64.

there allways has to be one perso who says that macs suck!!
macs are soo much better because:
core audio, i-life, no virisus, much much more reliable, great value.
why dont you just ask a pro, if you walk into any compuer based pro studio
there is a gigantic chance that there is going to be a mac in there.

No one did, Jimmy, but I said that for price to performance ratio, AMD socket 939 parts are hard to beat. If you're on a budget, you can build a very nice 939-based system which would handle a recording setup well. Fact is, Intel's Prescott cores ran very hot. AMD's processors from around that time were super-cool running beasts and very powerful due to the on-die memory controller which cuts out the processor's north bridge completely. It's taken Intel many years to catch up with AMD, the latter companies designs were worlds apart from the competition, and now Intel released their newer cores, AMD dropped behind slightly, but that means one thing: price drops on all AMD products.

Soon, AMD will release their next line of processors and we'll see how it goes.

Too true, my S939 rig that I built in the fall of 2005 is lasting me very nicely. Right now a good S939 would not cost that much to build. I could use a new GPU since the purchase of my new 22" monitor has put some strain on my 7800GT, but it's still running quite well.

The 65nm Brisbane will be interesting. Intel's E4300 also looks to be a new low price/high performance deal.
