Boss BR 600

Has anyone used this piece of kit? I was considering getting a loop station pedal but that still doesnt enable me to record but would be tons of fun. I could do both with this and its only £50 more.

But on a practical level is it easy to use? is editing straight forward? If using all eight channels for say a 5 minute song does anyone find its memory cut short? At what point is the info all encoded to .wav? when it is .wav and USB'd over does the PC play it no problem?

When it is on PC, whats the best free appliaction to convert to mp3?

Any info would be great

cheers

Rich

Re: Boss BR 600

I know this is going to sound stupid, but how do you plug in the guitar to this, the diagram in the manual just has the guitar itself plugging in. Doesnt it have to cater for effects and amp? I know my old 4 track used to.

If I just plug in the guitar directly or plug it in with chain of effects directly into the Boss 600 then what about the rest of my amps set up to get the sound i've tweaked?

Does anyone have any advise? is the amp not plugged into this at all?

thanks

Ill answer your first question now, other one later. I have the BR-600, and its great! However, if I were you I'd go down the computer route. Buy a preamp and use reaper, and record through your recording outs on your amp. Ill tell you what I like and dont like about the BR-600.
First off, its awesome quality, however, if you are not using a Mic., then you cant get the sound of the speaker/cabinet you are using.
The effects are awesome on it, but the distortions are very cheesy(in my opinion), but to a beginner, I bet they are amazing.
The looping is pretty easy. You can do an exact loop(2nd beat of the first measure to the 4th beat of the 4th measure) or you can tap the ab button as its playing. Obviously, it is more time-consuming than a looper pedal, but w/e.
The reason I say go with the computer recording is because on the br-600, the levelers are the biggest problem. After you save a song, it doesnt go back to the original level you sdt it at(say track one was at about half way and track two was at about 3/4 of the way, well a month later you go back to the song, and the levels are all screwed up)
Another reason to go to computer is that its so much easier to handle and get things done. You cant drag and drop stuff on a BR-600, or do any other useful things you can do with a keyboard and mouse.
I was debating between going computer route or BR-600 route, and I went with the BR, and now I kinda regret it. If you are looking for professional recording, go with the computer, if you want something compact that you can record ideas and mess around with, go with the BR.
The memory is awesome on it, and you can upgrade it. But if you dont upgrade it it still hold A TON. I recorded like 4 8 minute songs and it still is fine on memory, with all 8 tracks filled(quality on high). Dont worry about it. Even if you do have to expand, the compact flash cards dont cost that much.
It comes with a program that converts it. I forgot if its MP3 or not but theres a program that I always use to convert audio and video called Xilosoft. The free trial just doesnt allow over 5 minutes. But it doesnt cost that much to buy it in full.
Hope I helped. Good Luck!

You would have your whole set up, say it went:
Guitar-pedal-pedal-pedal-amp. You would put the out of the amp(headphones or external speaker) into the 'guitar' input on the BR-600. It says guitar input on the BR-600, but an input is an input. You can choose whether to use the BR-600's preamp, so yes, you can use your amps sound, or the BR-600's sound, or bit of each. There are MANY options. The out on the BR-600(it called it headphones) can go to monitors or speakers or another amp. W/e you want really.

Re: Boss BR 600

thanks for posting guitarevan07, much appreciated.

Since posting i've tried a few options, pre amp out on amp into mic1, this worked but was very quiet and when recording had to put recording levels high which caused hiss and such.

Also tried using the guitar input but this caused howling feedback from pre amp out from amp.

Tried a microphone in front of amp, but for bedroom recording you have to put the amp extremely loud to get desent recording level, so that idea not so good.

I'll keep tweaking and trying though

I too was in 2 minds with either laptop route or BR600. I ended up going BR obviously, kinda regret it, but i gotta admit it is a fun unit and does pack quite a few options, if i could sort input problem then it'd be great and only downside I can see would be lack of drag and drop and ease of move around options things like Cubase can offer.

Though I could export all the .wavs as seperate files then upload onto here to then edit in cubase, thats another option too.

Thanks again for your lengthy posts, cheers mate

Rich
