BR-600 - should i get it

hey guys!
i was thinking of recording my own album (blues, tapping and tiny bits of shred)
im 14 and also in a band so we wanna record mix and do our original tracks but i need to know!\ these few things first:

is the built in drum machine good, as good as the one on rusty cooleys track hillbilly militia?

can i plug the lead into the boss br-600 through my pedalboard or multifx pedal? - or do i have to use the onboard effects???

thanks

Buy a computer and record with pro tools.
Those recorders are crap, dozens of tiny editing screens!
I had several roland ones even that one with 16 channels and a not so tiny screen.
Manual is like a bible.
Pro tools is like plug and play, even a baby could uses it.

why not a pc?
Buy a laptop with pro tools.
Dude there's nothing better than editing on a pc.
Editing on those recorders = HELL !

I got the Boss Micro BR. It's a good musical notebook for getting ideas down quickly. I havent gotten into it too deeply yet but it seems to be able to do quite a bit, including exporting files to my friends pro tools rig.

Re: BR-600 - should i get it

I disagree. I have a boss 1600 and it is way easier to use than Pro Tools. The built in pre amps are very usable, and editing is simple as well. loads of on board effects, hundreds of drum and bass patterns, cut and paste functions, 8 inputs with separate pre amps. It is a portable unit that I can record direct with or mike my amps. I have recorded acoustic drums and guitars, direct e-drums, it does it all. I will never deal with another computer crash or latency issues again. I am not a pro, but I have recorded 100's of tunes and I will never go back to a computer based system again. But of course, that is just one man's opinion.

Re: BR-600 - should i get it

I had a BR-1180 with the CD. It was a pretty good unit I must admit but the drum machine was tedious to use. You should be able to plug your multi-effects right into any one of the BR machines no prob. But if this is something you want to record your entire band with, I think you would be limiting yourself quite a bit. OTOH, if you are just going to record, one thing at a time, there should be no problems. Like I said, I liked mine, but having limited tracking ability was a real drag, and all the crap you had to do just to program in a simple beat wasn't worth it. PC or laptop is the way to go. Especially when you can build a very good PC DAW for cheaper than what a BR1180 goes for new. You get a lot more going the PC route.

Re: BR-600 - should i get it

Ive got the Br-600 and i love it, although i dont tend to use a lot of its features.

sound quality is brilliant for laying down ideas and its not a fiddly as many suggest. I tend to bypass all the effects and drum patterns etc and mainly just use the recording functions. Ive never used pro-tools before so i cant compare but, the br600 is a solid piece of kit and not the worst price in the world either

Re: BR-600 - should i get it

i can get the fx pedals stringed up in my br 600 but i cant find anyway of using the amps settings too, ive tried a few options like putting a mic pointing towards amp but the sound quality comes across very poor compared to using 'guitar' input.

so basically i cant get my sound set up in the br 600 because i cant find a way to link it up with my amp, so having my stomp boxes lined without amp defeats the object as the amp settings is the core of my sound.

drum patters are a pain to use, though there are some default ones to play along too.

Its a good unit, and i'm sure theres a way to have amp linked to it too but i have no idea and ive tried every option i can think of. If i could solve it then i would use this quite a bit but because I cant i pretty muchjust use it as an expensive guitar tuner.

Though that tiny screen is awkward for changing settings and editing anything!

ive just got my POD going through it so i dont tend to use it with my amps or anything. Come to think of it, hardly use anything on other than the record button

How long term are you thinking? I've had stand alone devices and the buttons wear out after some time, especially with heavy use. I'd recommend the computer stuff for anything more than simply getting ideas down in a stereo/2 track format.

Re: BR-600 - should i get it

i can imagine with a lot of time and a vast amount of patience with the drum editing that u could do quite a lot and get impressive results. But just be prepared to get annoyed learning it, unfortunately the manual isnt the best of manuals. Then once learnt then have fun trying to export to pc in wav format, i could only manage to get one channel to wav and the others didnt get exported and neither did the drum patterns,

again am sure theres a way, its a bit like tomb raider trying to solve its puzzles!
