Building my studio - HELP!

Ok - So I decided to take some of my savings and build a studio. Here is what I have so far:

Mac G5 2.0 Dual Processor w/1GB SDRAM
Logic Pro 7
MOTU 828
Omnirax Prostation desk

Here is what I still need suggestions and help with:

1. Vocal mike (best mike for the price?) Condensor?

2. Mike preamp?

3. Do I need a better sound card than what comes with the mac? Or can I just use the stock card?

4. I need an awesome dedicated external hard drive - any ideas? Would prefer rackmount - but not a must

Anything else I am missing? What about for mixing down or mastering? I think I should be able to get some pretty high quality recordings with this rig once it's all together.

I have about another $3000 - 3500 to spend.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Building my studio - HELP!

1.Mic - If you want cheap with great quality for the value, I'd say the MXL 990. It's an amazing sounding condensor for only about $60. I have one and it sounds great. If you have a bit more cheddar, consider the Shure KSM44. $700, it's a terrific mic. Alot of people have been very impressed with Shure's foray into condensors with the KSM line. Don't forget a good dynamic mic if you don't have one. The ol' favorite Shure SM57 is a great mic, works on everything. I use it for guitars, bass, kick, snare, and it's brother the SM58 for vocals. Great all-around workhorse mic.

2. Pre-amp - Again, cheap but good. Behringer Shark DSP110. It has phantom power, built in compression, works good live or in the studio, and is only about $80. I find the Behringer pre's are good value for the money, and sound pretty good. If you want to go more high-end, the Blue Tube stuff is pretty good from what I hear. And some of the better mic-pre's you'll find are the Avalon stuff. They have a mono mic pre (This stuff rocks) for $1500. Pricey, but great quality.

3. Sound Card - I don't know alot about Macs, so I can't say much here. You'll want at least 24-bit 96kHz nowadays. If the Mac has that standard, then you'll be fine. MOTU makes good stuff, knda geared toward Macs. I've hard good things about PreSonus. They have two pretty decent soundcard/interfaces out, 1) the Firebox, which is 2 input, phantom powered, for $400, and 2) the Firepod, which is the same pretty much, but with 8 inputs, 8 outputs, and goes for $600. Both have mic pre's, which means you don't have to buy them seperate.

4. Hard Drive - I'd say any 7200rpm Firewire HD, that's 100Gb or more would be good. They actually have Firewire 1 Terabyte drives out now, for like $800! That's 1000Gb!

Anyone with more input/knowledge, chip in! I'm the budget guy, so I would't know what to do with $3500 to burn. To quote Napoleon Dynamite, "Lucky!"

With 3K to spend, here is what I would do...
1. Vocal Mic - Soundelux U195 $1100
2. Mic Pre - Great River MP-1NV $1075
3. Sound Card - Your 828 is a sound card so I'm confused by this. If you're not happy with your 828, I'd look at the Apogee Mini-Me, RME, or Lynx.
4. HD - I would buy a second internal SATA drive for your dedicated audio drive. An excellent choice would be the RAPTOR series from western digital. Then you can get any "bargain" IDE HD and throw it in a Firewire case for a backup drive. Check dealmac.com or slickdeals.net for hard drive deals for less than .50/gb.

Extras... depends on your needs, but a safe bet would be a UAD-1 Project pak or studio pak plus some additional plugs for the UAD-1 card.

good luck!

Re: Building my studio - HELP!

There seems to be a big range of affordable condensor mics around now. I have a Joe Meek that does the job pretty well.
For a preamp I use a Focusrite Platinum Trakmaster. The Platinum range looks lik eit offers pretty good value.
For rackmount drives have a look at Glyph stuff

Have you thought about a small ProTools setup? I don't know a lot about it but maybe you could get a basic setup for that price?

The only other things I can think of that might be useful are:

- Monitors (as in speakers, not display devices ) I didn't see any on your list. I'd definitely recommend trying a few pairs in a store. I'd pretty much made up my mind based on specs but completely changed my mind at the shop.

- I'm guessing you'll be doing all the mixing in the Mac, so you won't need a desk? You may want to think about things like headphone distribution and FX sends/returns for any hardware effects.

- a hardware control surface for mixing, there are lots of generic MIDI devices that would do the job or something more specialised.

- Dual monitors for the mac; Having Logic's arrange window on one monitor and the track mixer on another is great.

I'd also budget for a good book or some training on Logic too (if you're not familiar with it)!

Hope that helps.
