Re: cheap recording gear?

I have to say that I'm extremely happy with my Line6 KB37 purchase--MIDI controller and DAW interface all-in-one with POD Farm and RiffWorks included. If you don't have the $350 for that, use your computer, buy a cheap interface, and download Reaper for free. If Reaper works for you, pay the $60 home user license. Scrape the internet for free plug-ins and loops.

Hope this helps,

Race

I gotcha one better than that. When I record my psychadelic band, I use my 1969 TC-630 reel to reel, and a simple 16-channel mixer and we record live to session! Old school! Cassette what!?

Reel to Reel has the best analog quality you can imagine, but some of my reels are scratchy and dark sounding sometimes because I have to buy them from warehouses

Re: cheap recording gear?

An easy and cheap setup is getting yourself a used Line 6 Toneport ux2 and downloading free recording software from here: http://www.sonomawireworks.com/T4/

This software works with the Toneport ux2 and is incredibly easy to record with. Has some drums in this free software, but you can buy packs for $10. Total cost for this setup is about $150. Or get yourself a used Guitarport for under a $100 which is similiar to the Toneport.

Re: cheap recording gear?

Oh, man... my first "recording gear" was a Tascam Porta .05 -- four-channel recorder that recorded directly to cassette tape. You learned quick how to fill up the first three tracks then bounce them to the fourth, then fill up 1 and 2, bounce them to 3, then use 1 and 2 straight up to give you... OMG!!! SEVEN TRACKS!!!!

Recorded many a demo on that little guy with the "drums" from my mini Casio keyboard.

Glory days... yeah... (sorry)

Re: cheap recording gear?

When selecting mics I recommend buying Shure sm57's. You can use those mics on almost anything, they are fairly cheap and if you keep recording you'll never want to sell them. Even if you have more expensive mics later on they always come in handy.
They're a lifetime investment really...

Re: cheap recording gear?

btw. I have many great mics, DPA, AKG 414, AKG C12...etc.
still, the sm57 is my go to mic for recording guitars, snare and I even sometimes use it on vocals...
