Computer Editing Tricks

I'm going into Music Industry Arts next fall at Fanshawe College (recording/production/etc.) and will be working with Pro Tools, etc. So over the summer so far I've been trying to pick up tips here and there. I'm already as familiar with Pro Tools as I can be at the moment (used to have a copy of Pro Tools Free, but can't use it anymore as I'm on XP and can't get anything else to run and have read up on the newest upgrades to the Pro Tools system) and have been paying closer attention to the production on albums/songs and trying to figure out how things were done and researching what gear was used, etc.

Well, I've hit a snag on this one. It's "Starf*ckers, Inc." by Nine Inch Nails, more specifically the vocals on the verses. I know it was recorded with Pro Tools, and I'm thinking he probably recorded each word individually or without the backing (or possibly a different backing?) to guide him, then cut it all together. Here's a link to the music video (an easy way to hear the song):

Sounds as if he recorded the vocal track, then cut the end/decay of individual words out. Or took words and placed them over the end of the previous word.
I'd imagine it would be the kind of thing that would sound crap without the backing, so if you attempt it don't be discouraged if it just sounds bad on it's own.
