Control surfaces

Who is running a DAW with a control surface, what do you have and would you recommend it?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.
I'm eyeballing the CM Labs Motor mix, JL Cooper control station, and the New Evolution UC 33e controller.

I'm on a budget and would like to spend as little as possible so please don't tell me how great the Mackie or full blown protools systems are.

I have to admit, I do have a mackie... and I'm glad I saved the cash for it... it took me a veeeeeeeery long time... but this thing really is the mutts nuts.

I'm using is with adobe audition at the moment, but I'm planning the move over to Cubase soon.

We have a couple of CM Labs motormixes here at the studio. The only thing I dislike anout it is the fact that the faders aren't touch senitive, so you have to arm the automation regularly.

Other than that I would recomend it highly

Cheers

Kev, what, if anything, could you compare the Mackie to?
Tried any other brands?

well, it was quite difficult to get a hold of anything to physically try so it was litterally a case of going with as many opinions and reviews as I could... The only trouble with living in "the-middle-of-nowheresville"

In the end, it was a choice between the mackie control and the new Yamaha 01X control interface, which looked pretty hot... that one actually has the advantage of having physical inputs built into it... The mackie for me, won over, because it was marginally cheaper, supports slightly more software... (although this could have been updated on the 01X by now I guess...) and I already have an 8input Audio interface to which Im probably going to add/upgrade to a Motu 24I/O core system eventually anyhoo....

There are other smaller control interfaces about.. but I didnt really feel that any of them offered me the expandability and usability that the
Mackie did... The price is a little on the heavy side tho, I will admit... but then again.. the price for a new UV777 is quite steep... so I guess you just get what you pay for really

EDIT: my god... my spelling is attrocious
hope this perhaps show you my reasoning...

Bamm, for what it's worth I have got a yamaha 01x. It is really very good-plenty of inputs including one Hi-Z. motorized faders, internal effects and dynamics, good software included etc etc
It works well with Cubase Sx, and I believe it will soon work even better due to Steinberg/Yamaha cooperation.

the only issue for me was the Firewire interface-a great plus if you have a firewire interface on your computer that doesn't throw up glitches-Not all firewire interfaces are created equally!!!

I had to get a carillon AC1 to virtually ensure compatibility.
Other audio centered PCs should cope however, but I had a good specced, but ultimately ****ty Dell. Don't buy Dell!!!!

I tried the CM Labs surfaces and wasn't satisfied. Only once that I tried the Logic Control surface did I understand why. The Logic Control surface is much more intuitive, I find. Is this the one you didn't want to hear about, due to budget contraints? You can nail these on eBay for only a bit more than the CM Labs ones...

Here's what I have now:

And if you can't get a logic control (no longer made) you could get a mackie universal control. Basically the same thing.

Isn't it just firmware? as you can upgrade Logic Control to be a Mackie universal.
