CRT vs LCD will LCD kill the hum?
Just curious for you home recorders will a LCD kill some of the hum when playing in front of a monitor?
Right now im using a 17" CRT(Big somofabitch) and CompUSA has a good deal on a 19 LCD will it help or not worth spending the money..
I mean if its not broke dont fix it unless its going to significantly reduce some interference.

Yup. My 19" LCD doesn't induce hum, but my CRT does.

mmmmm...not so sure, probably humless from line frecuency, but they're still coils that produce a voltage when their magnetic field is affected, so I don't think you can put an EMG next to a CRT an get nothing.
LCD still produces an electromagnetical field, but is far smaller than a CRT. I can play with my guitar 20 inches away from my monitor and I get no hum from it at all.
The only thing I don't like about LCDs is that the colors were a lot better in my old CRT...I think is that they have more contrast? Well, that's the tradeoff of LCDs.

Re: CRT vs LCD will LCD kill the hum?
hum or not, a 19" LCD is far better than a 17" CRT.
it's easier on the eyes, it takes up way less space, looks cooler, if more power efficient and is more environmentally friendly.
Oh...and the prices on LCD monitors has dropped so drastically that it's almost silly to still be using a CRT. Once you use LCD, you'll never want to look at another CRT ever again.

Will I kill the hum ? What are we talking about ?
I'd never trade my 22" CRT for anything ( even if it heats up my studio better than my guitar amp )

Re: CRT vs LCD will LCD kill the hum?
The technology in LCDs do not induce hum in guitar pickups like CRTs do. If you're playing in front of a CRT monitor and don't get hum, count yourself very lucky.

That's not true (well, at least for me :P). I still want to look at my old CRT from time to time, specially when looking at pictures. Colors look A LOT better on a good CRT.
You're right tough in that the LCD is a lot more practical. Lots of free space, mine can rotate 90°, has 4 usb ports and looks a lot better too.

Amen to that, and if you've got a wireless networking card in your PC, learn how to disable it when recording. Gotta keep the RF interference to a minimum!
The CRT vs. LCD thing can make a big difference, but one thing to watch out for... many LCD monitors have external power supplies, which tend to get thrown behind the desk in a half-ass fashion. Anyway, just make sure you keep that power supply away from any audio cables in the studio, else it will be another potential source of interference.
