Drum Machine and Loops Recommendation

Can anyone please recommend a drum machine or something similar.

Here are my requirements:

Budget to mid-range price

Need it for some funky, heavy-type grooves

A drum machine seems fine but my knowledge is limited on how advanced they now are. Do they sample aswell (at a budget price)? I need good drum sounds....especially trip-hop type stuff.

Please let me know my options and what I should be test driving.

Chers people...

I still rely on my BOSS DR-5 which for more than ten years now, does exactly what I want ! You might even pick them up for cheap used these days, give it a try !

If you don't mind going computer based FLStudio is super simple to do a beat. They've even got some built in beats you can use. The bottom-line version is $70 I believe.

Personally, I use my Digitech GNX4 which has a built in drum machine. That keeps my beat until I bring my tracks into FLStudio when I do the real drums.

I'll look into this...I use Protools Mbox, is this compatible?

Re: Drum Machine and Loops Recommendation

Yea. Once you're done constructing your beat just export out as a .wav file. Bring that into your Protools session and you're done.

If you're interested in this solution, just go to www.flstudio.com and download the trial version. If you decide to buy it, buy the "download" version. You'll get free upgrades to new versions that way - for life. The trial version is actually every version in one...it's just locked up. Once you buy whatever version you want they'll send you a keycode file. Stick that in the spot they tell you to and your trial version unlocks to whatever version you bought.

I think the limitation on the trail version is you're not able to save your work, but you can do anything else.

I'll just add my 0.002 € ... I got myself an M-audio trigger finger drum pad and I use Ableton live 6 ... There are like 60 drum sounds in Ableton 6 ... That's enough for me

Re: Drum Machine and Loops Recommendation

I use flstudio too. Though I must admit I wasn't thrilled with the stock samples....they were just ok. I wound up using samples from a Drumkit refill for the program Reason. Best sounding drums I've done yet. I like the ease of use factor in flstudio. I also just export the drums (.wav) into my recording/tracking software.

I also have a midi controller with finger drum pads. I use that with Reason sometimes.... But, things seem to go better/easier with flstudio for me.

Yea, I've got a different drum kit than the stock one. I think it sounds as real as standing next to a real drum kit.

I use Fruity loops, and a zoom Rhythmtrak 234
Both really nice!!!

The zoom is a really good unit, very solid and reliable.

Re: Drum Machine and Loops Recommendation

I have a boss Dr880 and eventhough it seems to be a nice jamming machine i like the Alesis i had before a bit better in regards of doing my own thing. With that said, i personally suck when it comes to programming drums and i am not even sure you can without being a drummer. I mostly use the presets.

besides that i also use the betamonkey loops. They are great

Re: Drum Machine and Loops Recommendation

Thanks people...I checked out the betamonkey site.

I like the idea of using the loops from betamonkey. See, my mbox is playing up lately and it's really annoying me.

Are there any free standing drum machines out there that will take/construct a drum loop from a cd/file from say, betamonkey?

To not rely on my PC is ideal.
