Drum machine questions

So I've had this Roland DR-660 nearly forever, I bought it new in 1993 or something. The lithium battery in it died, and it refuses to work without it, (even though I have nothing stored in the drum machine -- I drive it via MIDI by computer.)

So, I open it up, and the battery is, well, I can't find it. I called Roland, and find out it's on the top surface of the main board, and most likely soldered in. In short, it's a major pain to get to, because you've got to take off the jack board (the one with all the jacks you plug into, and that is mounted in such a way that it looks like it was never meant to really be taken off, etc.

So, I'm thinking, this thing is umpteen years old, and the sounds in it are ok, but really nothing special. If I were a whiz with a zoldering iron, I could probably take this thing apart and find a battery and get it working again. But, part of me wants a new drum machine anyway.

So, I'm thinking of the Roland 880... Well, the 808 drums make the girlies get dumb, so the the 880 must make everyone within a square mile positively stupid, right? ;-)

But it occurs to me, a lot has happened since 1993, and i haven't really kept up with drum machines. I also have a Yamaha Motif Rack, and it seems to have some pretty decent drum sounds.

If you were going to buy a drum machine, what would you get, and why?

And, if you just happen to have a DR-660, and have managed to replace the battery in it, perhaps you could share some details about that experience.

Thanks...
