drum machines?

whats a good drum machine/drum programmer? the boss br-600 im using to record with has a 4/4 metronome that is almost useless for some stuff i wanna do, and i could use some work on consistent tempo, i heard about cubase or cubix not sure, any good?

im tryin to program drums anywhere from blast beats to funky jazz...something that'll sound good if i wanna do a snare roll or a roll on the symbol, or the bell, etc. and possibly with good sound bites to work with. any suggestions?

Re: drum machines?

It depends on what you plan to use it for. Boss has some drum machines, I own the Boss Dr-670 and it's great. If you're just want to make some simple loops to keep time while you practice or jam the 670 is more than enough and you could probably get away fine with a lesser unit. If you even want to use it for simple demo backing on home recording projects, the 670 and above will get the job done and can sound very good if you take the time. Still, if you want to get into more complex drum arrangements that "feel" more real, not talking about sound quality here, then I would recommend going with computer based stuff. The computer stuff offers a little more flexibility. For this, expect to take a good bit of time mapping out the drum part so that it isn't too repetitive. I don't use software too much at home so I don't have a lot of experience with it, someone else will have to recommend you good software. I'm just stating my impressions based on my experiences with the 670 vs some of my friends use of software.

Re: drum machines?

i'll look more into the boss drum machines, i mainly want to map out drums for some songs i have, or atleast a click track that will change tempo or time signature after some amount of measures, ofcourse i would have to program that but i dont mind, i just want to map out the drums to some songs so that i can record everything else at the same speed and such, with good samples, at least.

Re: drum machines?

If you're into computer recording I strongly recommend ezdrummer. It's midi, so you can do literally whatever you want, the sounds and the loops are great and the plugins cover from blast beats to jazz.

Re: drum machines?

It sounds like you need flexibily and if I were you I would not use a drum machine. You'll need a good one and they are not cheap! They are also fiddly to programme and edit (small menus and screens). But maybe you have no choice if you're not using a computer.

I was in the same boat a few months ago and I went with one of the best drum packages available: Addictive Drums. It was cheaper than a new drum machine and it's all you could ever want in a drum programme.

It's very easy to use, very easy to customise (you can literally add tons of effects and mic'ing techniques with a click of the mouse) or you can keep it simple.

It gives you a choice of a few different famous kits and all you do is choose your kit, customise it if you like and just bang away either with your mouse or a midi controller.

Best choice of software I have made this year.

Try the demo.... Instant drums, and instant recording of your riffs . Drag and drop riffs/drum tracks together to make songs.

Here I was just mucking around when I first got it.

I still haven't bought it though.

Think of it like you're the puppet master, and the drummer is your puppet

Just move some dials and instantaneously change the way your drummer is playing.
