EQ QUESTION......

First, let me say that I understand that eq is
some what a matter of personal taste but I think
there is some guide lines to start at...
I'm looking for ideas for a base line of where to
eq:bass guitar/kick drum and ryth guitars so
that each has it's own "space" to sit in.
I use cubase and and set the eq up for
high and low pass eq effects.
Example:
If I set the low pass for a bass guitar at
100hz, how far do I set the kick drum away
from it so I can get a good distinction between the two
do I set set the kick at ..110hz or 150hz?
See what I mean?
Lets say I want a fat Kings-X ryth guitar tone..
Do I want the eq settings for the ryth guitars and bass to overlap
on the low side to get a fatter mix?

Re: EQ QUESTION......

the human ear can only hear from 20hz to 20khz on the average person. that being said, i usually high pass everything except kick, bass, and sometime floor tom depending on tuning at 120-200hz. usually 150hz is a great place for most. i usually high pass bass around 80-120hz where 100hz is more typical depending on the tuning of the bass and kick. what i will do for getting the kick and bass to not fight is usually in the 120-200hz range. i'll normally dip a bit on the kick in this region and boost the bass to create space for the bass to sit without fighting each other. low pass these signals as well. 8-10khz chopped aggressively on these will make room for everything else and help to lower your noise floor and definitely clean up some of the mud.

most EG eq can be best accomplished with mic positioning than actual eq. i always high pass EG as well as everything not in low end territory. i'll even low pass on EG as well, around 16khz to make room for OH and vox. if you find guitars fighting too much against vox, cut EG around the 3-3.5khz mark and boost on the vox. you will find that it makes the vocal pop out more. be careful of the 5-7khz mark with vox as this is where most offending sibilance lies. i find that making EG bigger is in the 300-500hz mark, depending on tuning mostly.
there is a lot more, but i am tired and too lazy to finish typing.

Re: EQ QUESTION......

Hi there!

Here are some tips that I used when I'm mixing:

BASS DRUM

The "body" of the sound is around 60 Hz. If you increase it, it will make it huge, but maybe the "kick" will get a little far. Try decreasing/increasing 1000 Hz. Most of the times, this frequency is a little annoying, try to exagerate it to know what I am talking about. ALSO REMEMBER TO REDUCE/INCREASE ALL THE MULTIPLES OF 1000 Hz; 500, 250 AND 125 Hz. To increase the kick, try putting a high-pass filter in 4000 Hz (Metal kick). You can play around 2000 and 6000 Hz to get different sounds.

BASS GUITAR

The "body" is in 60 Hz also. The pluck sound or finger sound is around 2500 Hz. Tru reducing 1000 Hz in this too. You can put a high-cut around 3000/4000 Hz. You dont need that.

GUITAR

1000 Hz too. Remember, in most of the cases, this frequency is very annoying. Give it a low cut around 100 Hz. THE ONLY THINGS IN THE MIX THAT SHOULD SOUND IN THE LOW REGISTER ARE BASS AND BASS DRUM. In guitars, you can test a lot of frequencies.

REMEMBER!!!! ALL THE EQ MUST BE SET TO PEAK! ONLY THE ONES THAT I INDICATED AS LOW CUT, HIGH PASS, ARE NOT.

Try to mix the levels of the bass drum, bass, snare and lead voice to the same level.

If theres anything I can help with, feel free to send me a PM. I have a lot of material regarding mixing and recording.
