Garage band help.

When I try to redo a part of a track, I want to start the playback a couple of measures before the part where I have to come in so I can get ready for it. But for some reason I can't find a setting in garage band to not just record over and replace the track that is armed instead of just adding to it.

Basically, I don't want to end up with 15 tracks when I only need 1.

Is there a setting to fix this? I cannot find anything in any of the preferences or options. I hope my question makes sense, thanks.

This is standard in multitrack recording.
If you are editing a track you will record over the track...

So you need to make a new track and record again from where you left.
What you can do is the cut away the parts you do not need of this track and downsample it with the above track to one combined track again (I hope you understand what I mean, I am no native English speaker...).

Control>Count In

Gives you a four beat count in before it starts recording. It's a beautiful thing.

Also make sure you delete and don't record over, you can split tracks at specific points (command + t, or there's an option under the "Track" menu). Don't record over what's been recorded, otherwise it sounds like farts.

Re: Garage band help.

Count-in would be useful except for the fact that I rarely ever use the metronome in the program itself while recording because I cannot hear it at all while doing a take and there doesn't appear to be a way to turn it up. I just ignore the initial setup when you create a new project where you set the tempo and the key and just go for it. 90% of everything I've recorded thus far starts out as a jam between my friends and I, and then just gradually turns into a song. Thus setting a tempo for the project doesn't really make sense to do.

I guess the only way to solve my problem is to simply make a new track each time I need to re-do a section.

This is kind of disappointing, but I guess there's no way around it, thanks.
