good midrange a/d converter suggestions

hey everyone, i am interested in getting a good a/d converter to start up a studio, i'm using sony vegas and sound forge right now and i am running that through a emu 0404 sound card and i don't know if those converters are really up to par if you know what i mean. Any suggestions on a a/d converter would be appreciated, i've looked into the digidesign 001 cause its decently priced under 500 on ****, but the converters aren't the best i've heard from dave weiner on his forum(i asked him), i wish i could hear some some sound clips of some different converters, anyway any help appreciated.!!
