Got my first Multitrack hard disk recorder..

Its a Yamaha AW16G, This thing is crazy complex, Will probably take me a month just to get comfy with using it, but I'm pretty stoked, always wanted one. So now I guess I have a legit Bedroom studio I picked it up used with some trade in, works great though, its got a 20 gig HD which should be enough.

I'm going to end up micing the cabs with a 57, its really the only way to do it right.

that thing was a beast in its day. supplanted by the aw1600 right now, but still killer. while i am not a fan of standalone DAWs, the yamaha stuff i dig. cool thing about that particular DAW is that it can double as a control surface for recording software. if you wanted to, you could end up shooting all of your tracks that you recorded on the aw16g to your computer and control that with your aw16g as well. great little unit.

Looks cool Robb. I'm with you on the learning curve. I got a Presonus Firestudio and I haven't even taken it out of the box yet because I'm still haven't gotten around to figuring out what I'm going to do with my laptop as far as either dual booting 2 OS's or just having a single OS with 2 profiles.

As a side adventure, call Yamaha and find out if you put in a bigger drive, the unit will reformat itself. My PS3 came with an 80 gig drive but, if you put in a larger drive, the unit will load the os on its own.

Congrats!

Jimmy

How is that possible? There isn't a single computer connection back there.

you'd have to dump your tracks in analog with the direct outs and then connect to the computer via midi to use it as a control surface.

Re: Got my first Multitrack hard disk recorder..

btw, the big brother to the aw16g was the aw4416 and that unit was a beast. could do everything the aw16g could do, plus had motorized faders for automation. super sick unit for it's time. the aw4400 is what is most current, but a little bit more modern. i personally don't like standalone DAWs anymore because technology moves so quick that the price keeps going down and units like the aw16g become "outdated" as far as "standards" go. i had 2 yamaha units before going to PC based recording: the md4 and md8. both minidisc units and were great for their time. they were actually the precoursors of the AW family of DAWs from yamaha. you've got a great box there, robb. it is a unit that can grow into a larger system if you'd like it to. not many pieces of recording gear will do that...especially in the standalone DAW realm.

Re: Got my first Multitrack hard disk recorder..

My Zoom HD8CD should be arriving tomorrow, as well as a 57 and some other miscellaneous stuff. I'm pretty stoked; can't wait to do some serious experimentation on that thing. Lefty, I know we'll be using different recording devices, but they're also similar in some ways. We should touch base from time to time for tips/tricks and stuff. I've done some recording before, but this is my first hardcore recording device...the learning curve might be easier to swallow for both of us if we learn some of the same stuff at the same time. Anyway, open offer...
