Re: Guitar Rig 3

I have it and use it a lot. I don't play gigs anymore, so the half-stack was overkill for my house. If you don't buy the foot pedal, you need a pretty decent audio card, otherwise latency is an issue. It is very versatile and I am able to get the tones I want. If you need something for playing live, then I would go for a "real" amp.

Re: Guitar Rig 3

hey, thanks for the reply

could you recommend a good audio card?

I've just this minute found the trial version on the NI site and downloaded and installed GR3 and yep, i've experienced notable latency on my stock Dell pc's soundcard

it depends on how much do you want to spend, and if you want mobility. PCI/PCIe/PC Card/Card Bus/Firewire are ok latency wise, stay away from USB ones.

Re: Guitar Rig 3

Before I bought the foot pedal, I used a an EMU 0404 internal PCI sound card. About $100 new. You can get them on the Bay for 60-70.

Re: Guitar Rig 3

I just ordered GR3 Kontrol edition online. I hope the latency is ok. I'm skeptical since it's USB, but I've read plenty of people say the latency is ok with the kontrol pedal and a fast computer.

Re: Guitar Rig 3

My Guitar Rig 3 Kontrol Edition showed up the other day. I plugged it in the first night and I was pretty let down. I couldn't get acceptable latency without a lot of clips and pops. I put it back into the box to return it. Fortunately I did a little research and found some tweaks for XP. I performed the tweaks, and plugged it into a different port with a different cable. I was able to get it down to the lowest latency settings without any audio artifacts. I must say that I am now very impressed with the latency over USB. I am very happy with GR3 and I recommend it to anyone who has a beefy enough computer to run it.

I've had no latency problem using it as a plug in Pro Tools and my computer is plently crappy. Maybe I'm just lucky Haha.

Not really familiar with it. But would like to say ......make sure you are using ASIO drivers.

Don't know if there are any other options but ASIO with it anyway?

Re: Guitar Rig 3

For those wondering, here are the tweaks I did:
- Disabled unused onboard devices (Onboard HD Audio, Firewire, Raid Controller)
- Turned off power management on the USB ports
- Set CPU priority to background services

It made all the difference in the world. I can use a 1ms usb buffer/2ms audio buffer @ 96000 Hz. According to what the driver panel says that is 9ms in to out latency. That feels about the same as a saggy tube amp to me. I wish it were a little less, but I'll take it. It appears that is the least amount of latency the ASIO driver will allow for.

My PC Stats:
XP 32 SP3
Intel Core Duo 2 @ 3Ghz
4 GB Ram
Asus P5K motherboard
10,000 rpm SATA hard drive

Re: Guitar Rig 3

Karl,
looks good, sounds bad..
ive used it and then used a proper amp back to back and while guitar rig was great while I was playing it after I plugged into a proper amp the transition was such a contrast.
it was like I had to try and force the playing when using GR3 and there was no character or decent harmonic undertones that you take for granted when using a decent amp.

godd enough for pissing about on the PC with though.

Yeah, it really doesn't stack up next to a good Tube amp. I think it is the best amp modeller you can get. Maybe Eleven by Digidesign but that cost $500 or something ridiculous like that.

I completely agree. To my ears it sounds better than the Line 6 amps and even better than my old Johnson modeling amp that had a tube preamp. It's not amazing, but it's good enough to the point where I don't feel like it sucks my inspiration away like some modelers do.

A tip: I haven't tried this myself, but I've read about people taking their tube amp, and running the recording line out of the amp, or even better yet, the recording line out of a hotplate into guitar rig using ONLY post fx and a cab emulator.

Re: Guitar Rig 3

i got the guitar rig kontroller a few months back and it sucks, to say the least. its nothing compared to my DSL 100. couldn't get a decent marshall tone even when using the plexi/lead800 in there.

i have a question.. now that the kontroller already has a built in sound card, is it possible to hook up a mic in there and record from my tube amp instead?
