Re: guys please help..

get a better sound card for one. the stock card is ok, but get a better prosumer card like an m-audio delta 410 or emu 0404. the line6 toneport is better, too. get a decent small mixer for the front end. preamps are the biggest, most overlooked aspect of home recording. a behringer can be had for less than $100. last thing...a good preamp for vocals!!! for cheap, the art tube mp has been the staple of the industry for more than 10 years. now they are less than $50 new. so in the end...less than $300. you'll get way more out of your rig.

I know this is an old subject but coming across this
i just had to comment.

The gear you use is about 20% of the product IF that.

Its about knowing how to use the gear you have.
Understanding how recording works.
Basicly knowing what you're doing.

Its frustrating to me (i record sound for a living)
when someone thinks all they need is some piece of gear
and they should be able to record like a pro.

I guarantee you if you give a pro crap gear it'll sound better
than a novice with access to a million dollar studio.

Let me hand you a scalpel and have you go remove a gall bladder.

The one thing the average novice has at his disposal today that is the one
thing that DOES make it sound more professional is the fact
that most of the sounds "he" uses is "canned"

Meaning his drums are already there for him, perfect sounds..
He doesnt have to mic a REAL drumset anymore. Doesnt need to know the techniques of micing that kit, phasing..etc.

His guitar sounds come out of a software program..already sounding great.

etc..etc.
