Have a studio...now what to do?
OK. So a generous friend loaned me his Boss BR1180 (
http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/en/BR1180.html
) I've been playing around with it a good bit. Recorded both my Pod XT and my Mesa Triple Rec into to it (by way of a
THD Hotplate
of course).
My main question is, I have the general recording process down, but what extra steps can I take after its recorded onto the Boss? I have Reason 3.0 as well, but am lost as where to even start with that. Any other advice would be handy.
Also, I am fully aware that the Hotplate acts as a dummy load, but can I disconnect my
speaker cab
completely? Remember I'm already running from the line out of the hotplate...I just want to make sure before I blow something up.
This would be very handy so I could record the full tone of the rec without having to wear ear muffs and ear plugs!!

Re: Have a studio...now what to do?
I wonder where you got that from!
I would definitely suggest dumping the pre-mix to a computer and finish it off there with Reason. You can get pretty close and with good results on the Boss.
As long as you have a relatively decent monitoring system (you've seen mine, it sucks, but it's doing the job) then you can pretty much play it however you want or as loud as you want bypassing the cab, but what you hear is what you get. You're not going to mess anything up.
I run my combo straight into the line on the 8 track, and eventhough I like the sound from the amp, it still needs tweaking once it gets the the recorder.

I'm monitoring with headphones right now...not so bad I guess. I need to re-install reason as well as whatever software I need for the boss. I have it hooked up through midi's right now, but my computer hasn't recognized it yet...still being jewish.
BTW, I didn't unleash the recto on it yet...but from what I heard its buck nastiness!! WOOOOOOOHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Re: Have a studio...now what to do?
Believe it or not, you'll get great results using headphones. I used to use headphones with mine (and probably would if I cared about what I was recording) but I just go through that POS now, and get okay results.
What are you throwing down on it right now? You know I have a drum machine!
I'm supposed to be playing with a drummer that just got back in town. I'm sure you'll laugh when you find out who it is, but I'm sure everyone here has heard of him.

I have a BR900 and a Triple Rect also. I didn't know you could run the head straight to the recorder. How do you do it.

Re: Have a studio...now what to do?
With the THD hotplate. Straight from the line out on the back. I haven't tried mic'ing it for sound yet...but straight through the back of the hotplate sounds pretty crazy.

You should have a "line out" on the head, and run in right into the "line in" on the recorder.
I don't really deal with heads that much at all, but mainly
power amps
and preamps, so I might not be too much help here.

Re: Have a studio...now what to do?
So you run the head to the hotplate and then to the input of the recorder? Does it matter how many ohms the hotplate is?
Ive tried micing my cab and it is really hard for me to get the sound I want that way Ive moved the mic in almost every possible postion I could try.

Mic'ing up a cab is an art of it's own, it is a lot easier to run directly into the mixer or recorder.
I've tried both ways, and even running direct requires a substantial amount of tweaking (in my limited experience).

The ohm-age of the hotplate has no bearing on the signal going to the recorder (don't quote me on that though..lol)
Here is how I'm running it so far:
Mesa > Hotplate Speaker Cab (through supplied speaker outs)
>
Input of Recorder (from line out directly to input)

Phil, that is the slowest thing I've ever heard you play...
Sounds good, though. Was that the triple rec/hot plate?

Re: Have a studio...now what to do?
Yah...a little slow for my liking. I'll probably do a bunch of slow riffs like that than make beats for em and speed em up.
That was the pod xt man...
No mixing afterwards. I burned a cd, and ripped it to my pc.
