Headphones

So I'm starting a music technology course in September and need to get my own headphones and I'm not really sure what to look for, I'm guessing headphones with a wider frequency range are better but other than that I'm completely clueless as to what to look for, my budget is around £60-70, so what should I look for? Also if you have any suggestions as to what headphones to get that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Headphones

I have a pair of Yamaha headphones... don't really recall the model number.
They are excellent! Flat response, lightweight and unexpensive!

I reccomend!!!

Re: Headphones

you want wide frequency range with as flat an eq curve as possible. sennheiser, sony, and akg make good models in any price range. closed back and open back may be an issue for you if you need isolation, so look into that as well. i have 3 main types of earphones that i use. all of these are more prosumer based, but have yielded great results due to application.
vic firth sih-1: i use these for tracking. not the greatest tone, but very helpful for minimizing bleed into condensor mics. they offer around 24db of attenuation of outside sound to the ear. great around live amps and drum kits, too.
akg m70: got these with the musician's friend art headamp, m70 pack. better sounding, but with less attenuation. these are far better for overall monitoring where bleedover is less critical.
ultimate ears superfi 3. these are inner ear monitors which we use for stage work. very clean and clear. almost no leakage and the sound is magnificent. these are the low end ultimate ears and i have heard the upper models. they are fantastic. granted these are much more expensive, but are worth it for audiophiles.

i am looking to spend about $200 a pair for 2 new studio only headphones. one pair for tracking vox in front of my mics and a second for critical mixdown. so i am interested in responses to this thread as well...just with a lesser restrictive budget.

Re: Headphones

I've been having a look about and reading some stuff and closeback seems to be the best choice seeing as i'll be in a classroom so wont want to disturb others with sound coming from my headphones, this is whilst I'm using the computers, although for recording I'm not sure if i'll be using my own headphones for that or not either way closed back seems to be the more suitable choice, as far as headphone choice I've been looking at sennheiser hd280's they seem quite good. How would i find out the eq curve of the headphones?

Re: Headphones

Sony 7506's.
An Industry standard.
Pretty inexpensive $95?
Low imped. Loud, dont need to drive a headphone amp to max.
Slightly hyped high an low, yet tight.

I have a pair on my head for hours everyday of my life, and at this point I couldnt/wouldnt mix without them.

Whatever headphones you decide on, listen to a lot of other source material..
learn how they sound..what their weaknesses are, just as any loudspeaker, knowing what they are actually doing is most of the battle.
