How do you record your music

Not in, what software or equipment but in,

do you do the drums first?? rythm parts? do you play thye whole thing in one shot? Or do you record individual pieces and than put them together ?
How many tracks do you usually use ? 1 for drums 1 for bass or 2 for each panned out?

What is the best way, lets hear it.

Re: How do you record your music

What my band does is we record the entire track once through, listen to it a few times and decide what needs work. Then we layer each track individually over the whole thing, replacing it one track at a time until the whole thing is a new version.

I think generally doing it this way helps us keep our individual rhythms since we're used to playing as a group at once.

Acid pro rocks.
I make my backing tracks in guitar pro then import the midis into acid pro and record the guitars. I havent found a decent drum program that is as easy as midi so the time saved is worth the drop in quality.

I like to build drums in Garage Band then use my old Roland 1680. I prefer to mic my amp rather than go through modeling devices. Last time I recorded with a band we used our own ADAT's and pretty much worked live - going for a solid drum track then building upon it.

Do you play all other tracks in at once or in pieces and than piece it together ?

Nowaday's I record alone for fun so I have to play guitars, bass, vox, and anything else one track at a time and build it. Getting the drums programmed is always the hardest part. I have a real kit but I suck too much, not to mention I don't have the mic's to really mic it right.

I'm in the same boat. The drums are the hardest. Currently, I'm using Reason with the Drum Kit Refill and an Axiom25 midi controller.

The next hardest thing is getting an acceptable recorded guitar tone.

I also record the parts in one piece and screw up mostly just before the end of the song which is really aggrevating

If I I'm doing my own stuff I normally go for melody first, drums but it's very hard to say actually but if I'm doing band's stuff I record one by one

Re: How do you record your music

I used Beat It for drums, it's an ok drum program, it worked for me, after that, I ran direct into my Digitech effects processor through a Roland VS 1824, that thing is a beast, here's a pic of me recording my last song, song number 12, im ready to master it and get it out for 2007.

I use Pro Tools LE and lay down a click and then whatever is the most important instrument to laying down the foundation next. It helps that I play drums and what I do is lay them down last and then mix down. Check out www.myspace.com/eddiecurnan for more detail.

Re: How do you record your music

If I'm recording by myself, since I a guitarist, I almost always lay down rhythm guitar scratch tracks, first, then either the drums or the bass (depending on song structure), then, I re-record the rhythm tracks, do vocals, and, finally, any guitar solo work. I always leave that for last, cause you never know when you may do something different than intended with the vocals, and you don't want the solo work stepping all over the vocal lines. Not only that, but it alows me to get a total feel of the song, and only add solo work, where/if needed.
