I want to start recording

I picked up cakewalk and plugged my guitar into my microphone jack. Aside from my computer speakers not being very good moniters, the recording quality was aweful. My amp doesn't currently have an audio out although I'm hoping to get a good one in the near future.

Would I be able to get superior recordings by buying a microphone, say an SM57, rather than plug directly into my soundcard?

Easiest way to get good noises is get a modeler and go into sound card. Or yeah, an SM57 to mic your amp...
