is it possible to use the line out on my carvin head, and plug into the 8 track?
my carvin mts 3200 has a line out in the back. is it possible to plug that into my boss br864 8 track's line in and record that way, with the
tube tone
?

you would need some sort of load to stop the amp blowing, and a speaker simulator to get a 'real' sound.
Checkout Koch's attenuator (with speaker sim + direct out) or Palmer's speaker simulator.

Line out is fine, speaker out is a no-no. I'm pretty sure those have a cab voiced line out.

Just out of interest, what would this sound like, using the line out? I havent used the one on mine. I'm assuming it won't sound too great...

If it has a cab simulator it will probably sound passable, nothing beats the sound of a well mic'd speaker at volume (at least for high gain sounds).

it will not sound good. lineout is weak and thin. you will not get at all what you're looking for. the only lineout that works well are the line-outs on rack units such as rocktrons or alesis.....or any other pre-amp processor unit.
what i use for all guitar recordings going direct is LINE6. they started out with the direct recording and then worked on amps. it's unbelievable the tone you get with those amps / preamps going direct!
for you i would mic the cab and you can do so at a quiet level and still get a great tone! for me the best tones have been ones when the cab is not blaring! no louder than 1 or 2 will work great.

Try the line out AND mic it at the same time, mix them both so it sounds good and bounce it down to a single mono track.

I tried the line out of my legacy once,...
It hasn't seen a jack even close since then.
