Re: Looking to setup a personal recording studio

I read it in Sound On Sound.... I was wrong to say Firewire. Soz

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan0...notes_0109.htm

"So while the new MacBook Pros and MacBooks are great computers, the connectivity issues are worth considering before you make a purchase. Right now, the 17-inch MacBook Pro, which hasn't been restyled like the 15-inch, may remain a sensible option, as it still offers both Firewire 400 and 800 ports, has the option of a matte-finish display, and comes with a regular dual-link DVI port."

Great to hear that it is not such a big deal...the music production press have really slammed Apple for the Firewire changes!

I have now found the offending article (thought I was going nuts...):

Future Music June 2009, page 108:

"While Firewire seems to be disappearing from Macs in favour of FireWire 800 (in fact there's no FireWire at all on the new Macbook- what were they thinking?) FireWire 800 is backwards compatible with FireWire 400 thankfully! While a FireWire 400 port cannot transfer data as fast as an 800 port, an 800 port can certainly work at slower 400 speeds with no problems at all. All ou need is to purchase a FireWire adaptor to turn one end of your 400 cable into an 800 connector or buy a FireWire 400 to 800 (6 pin to 9 pin lead) which can be purchased from most computer peripheral suppliers. Rest assured your shiny new Macbook Pro and your old FireWire 400 gear can exist togethre in perfect harmony!"

Re: Looking to setup a personal recording studio

I'm a PC, running Sonar 8.

I have Core 2 processor @ 2.00GHz and 3GB RAM on 32 bit Vista (visual enhancements turned off). Chump change for a PC compared to a Mac, and it runs Sonar FLAWLESSLY!

Aha, there it is.

You know, I think it's a typo... I think it should have read like this:

"While Firewire 400 seems to be disappearing from Macs in favour of FireWire 800 (in fact there's no FireWire 400 at all on the new Macbook- what were they thinking?) FireWire 800 is backwards compatible with FireWire 400 thankfully!"

But I could be wrong. It'd be pretty stupid if they actually thought there wasn't any FireWire at all.. lol

Re: Looking to setup a personal recording studio

I'm using a new iMac with Logic and NI and it couldn't get any better for me. This iMac is the best computer I've ever had.
