M-Audio Sound Card?
Hey,
I have a m-
audio firewire
audiophile soundcard
I get this strange buzzing distortion and everything slows down (the music)
when i increase the Asio/Wdm buffer rate it doesnt do it!
Why does it do it at a buffer rate of 512 samples
thanks for your help !

Re: M-Audio Sound Card?
Could you elaborate a little? Do you hear lots of clicks and pops that are throwing off the timing, gradually making it lag further and further? Sounds like it could be an underrun issue. How much ram do you have?
I use one too, and the one thing I can tell you is that it REALLY doesn't play nicely with other soundcards. I had a lot of problems with dropouts until I realized that I was recording through the M-Audio but monitoring through my computer's soundblaster card. Fixed that, and suddenly everything was lovely.

I get that lagging and popping. I only have 385 mb of ram, is that not enough? I only had 128 back in July, but I got my computer fixed by this tech and he was like "I'll upgrade your ram by 256 mb for $100, this is more than you will ever need!"

I wouldn't want to use less than 1gb of ram to be honest. But it would depend on what your motherboard can cope with.

Re: M-Audio Sound Card?
Would a gb of ram be very expensive? I don't know much about computers at all.

Find a new tech. I've seen 512mb sticks at
www.newegg.com
for $50, and if he's charging you more than $50 in labor, that's absurd. As for never needing more than 385, well, I'm running 512 and even I think that's too little, I just haven't gotten around to buying more yet (I'm still demoing for the CD I'm working on).

+1.
I haven't seen a difference in my own use between 512M and 1GB, but YMMV - especially in hard hitting apps like multitracking with plugins.
But the tech was way too expensive. Assuming $25 for 256MB RAM, it should have been $50 TOTAL for this 10 minute job - including travel time. Or else he should have upped you to a GB for the price he charged.

Re: M-Audio Sound Card?
Man, that guy pisses me off. He just fixed my computer and I asked him if there was anything to do to speed it up. He said that he wouldn't charge me for labor, just for the part, lol. I didn't look into it at all because he told me that my computer was all fixed and stuff, and to come pick it up. When I got there, the ram thing was just brought up as an afterthought so I didn't really pay enough attention to go shop around for it myself.
