Re: Mic Preamp Directly to Soundcard?

Checkout the Line6 UX2.

It has XLR inputs, phantom power, instrument level inputs, etc.

It even uses the same software as the XT Live. It's what I use.

Pod XT Live and UX2.

I use the XT for guitars. The UX2 for Vocals and Bass guitar. It has software amp/cab sims for the bass and mic preamps/effects for vocals. It's the simplest and cheapest all around recording solution for me.

I also use Reason and a Midi Controller/Kybd for drums, etc.

The only thing left is the recording software. I don't like the Ableton Live the Line 6 products come with.

I paid less than $150 for the UX2. Works for me.
