Re: mic recomendation

For vocals: Rode NTK, excellent value valve mic

For amps: I got a Beyerdynamic M88 which was the competition to the Shure SM 56. I reccomend the Beyerdynamic although the Shure is industry standard.

Great mic

what are you looking to do with it?

I own about 45-50 mics myself.

Here are a few
Lawson L-47MP (a little over $2grandish)

AKG 414-buls and an awesome sounding 414EB with a c-12 capsule (about $2800 for those 2. The EB is worth a lot more)

Schoeps CMC5-MK41 -- Schoeps CMC6-MK41 (just under 4 grand for these 2 with a couple accessories)

audio technica is definately a pro-sumer level mic brand.
Tell me what you need it for and i'll give you some much better options

Re: mic recomendation

The shure SM57 should be enough for home recording and it shouldn't cost you that much. Last time I checked, one of those costed less than 100 bucks. Unless you're trying to record vocals or if you need lots of definition, then a cardoid mic should be your next step.

how can you possibly say that when you dont know what he wants to do
with the mic?

First off his budget is higher than needing to resort to a 57.
Thats not a diss on 57's..i own 6 of them

but hardly the mic i would get if i had more $$ to spend.

and how do you know what pattern he needs?

You don't think the NTK is value for money? It worked great for me, I recommend it...

sorry. anything with the name rode on it isnt worthy to me.

And yes, in the past years ago i owned a Rode...ugh..what was the name..
the one that looked like a U87. (lookin it up..its was an NT2)

All i can say is i wish you could listen to a few of my top dollar mics
and then listen to your budget mics.

You are judging your mics with no real good comparision.

The guy has almost a grand to spend on a mic.
He could be getting a neumann 103 for that.

in fact..that would probably be my choice for him..not knowing
exactly what he needs it for.

PLUS buying a quality mic is going to hold its value 10x better than
a cheap consumer one.

Sorry just the way it is.

if you can stretch it
absolutely buy a neumann TLM 103

It will sound AMAZING on vox compared to the other options
you were given.

A 103 is a mic used in post houses and major studios everywhere.

Its designed after the famous Neumann U87
but its single patterned. (cardiod)

---
I looked on e---bay and it seems like they go on there for about $700
Might be a good avenue for you.

I promise you 10x better quality

Neumann and schoeps are 2 of the highest respected microphones in the world. Period.
